Hi, I am currently using a -3 diopter on my R2A and RD1s. Which one should I go for ? -2 or -3? because the Leica have -0.5 built-in and don't have a option for -2.5

Only one way to find out. Go to the optician and hold his try-out lenses for -2.0 and -3.0 in front of the ocular. Or splurge Euros and buy both (not recommended😉)

if you like to focus accurately, and see clearly through the Leica film and digital, Nikon SLR film (F3), and RD1, then the same value diopter works for me for all of those.
Check with your eye doctor to verify if that's also best for you.

Every camera viewfinder system has some value built in. Most opticians will not have much knowledge of that, so they might not be able to advise you of the optimum for you. Leica diopters are available in 0.5 increments. Is it only Leica that understands that this is necessary for some customers?
Given the price of Leica diopters, you don't want to get it wrong. The best solution is to go to a shop that has the range, and try the values around your value.
The next best is to buy from a shop that will allow exchange if the value is unsuitable. That is more difficult because it's a bit harder to make the comparisons.
What is your optical prescription for distance?

He should not let the optician advise, he should look through the lenses and decide. The onlydiopter steps are 0.5,1.0,1.5,2.0 and 3.0. So there is no 2.5

Thanks Jaap, I was not aware of the absence of -2.5.
In trying out the diopters, I think it best to view them on the camera in ambient light that is not very bright, and try focusing on objects at various distances. Personally I find the portrait distance range the most important as far as getting the diopter right.

Went to Specsavers (yes, really) and asked the Optician for my prescription, which was -1 on my sighting eye. So i say to Optician, "does that mean that as the camera is -0.5 and my eye is -1, do I need a -0.5 or a -1.
She began by saying that it was confusing, then started crying. Somewhat confused myself, I was strangely asked to leave.
I won't say anything about time-of-the-month or hormones . . . Oops, I just did.😱

I wasn't aware that Specsavers employed opticians. I thought they got their staff from the same labor pool Sainsbury's uses for their replenishing staff....

I bought from ebay -0,5 leitz diopter lens, it worked beautifully on my leica M8 and Nikon F where I just used it to try by hand holding. Then I bought a generic -0,5 diopter lens for Nikon. It was really bad, nowhere the leitz correction. It just says, beware and test for yourself

Easiest thing to do - go to a shop that sells reading glasses. We have .99 stores and pharmacies here in the States that sell over the counter reading glasses. Try a pair of -2 and -3 glasses and figure out which works best.

Keith, I have never seen negative diopter reading glasses at any store. They are all plus diopter.

You need to find out from your optician or eye doctor the actual prescription and base it on that. If by chance you are using a Nikon -3D on the Cosina, the actual power of that diopter correction is -2 diopters since Nikon labels their diopter lenses as a net total with -1 diopter included from the optical power of their prism finders. Therefore, their labeling of their diopter lenses represents the total power of the system ( for example -3D Nikon diopter is -2 actual diopter power plus -1 of the finder = -3D labeling).
