I dont think theres much demand for a fixed 28. Its just too wide.
I doubt Leica would go that route.

I agree. I've been amazed at how 'wide' a 40 is on my Cl and the '35' on my x100T.

A fixed lens and an evf make,no sense to me. EVFs work well for zooms. Framing changes with focus distance with a fixed lens, but the frames move in the optical X100 finder. An EVF perhaps is to distance it from the Ms, but with the X100 getting better and a new XPRO2 soon Leica better watch out in case someone like Cosina/Zeiss doesn't come because Leica is 'protecting' their Ms.

full frame, 28mm, rf-style evf...nice, but not my cup of tea. for that kind of camera, i'd prefer aps-c with a 35mm-e lens.

now, if it had a 24-100mm f2.8 lens, slr-style evf, and a tilt/swivel LCD, that would work out great as a sony r1 replacement.

28 mm isn't wide. It is less forgiving.
They could name this camera as Leica GW.

Dang. I must say I like the look. I can see the eyecup of EVF peaking out, and seems like the lens barrel got manual focus scale as well. Looking forward to learning more about the camera.

The 15mm f1.7 Panasonic-Leica m4/3 lens (which is a quite nice lens on Oly/Pano bodies) is also called "Summilux."

I guess f1.7 is the new 1.4.

28mm FOV is not so wide if you are an urban dweller. Not for everyone, but good for me.

28mm is perfect, and with 24MP you can easily crop to get 35mm, its not possible in the other way 😉

Maybe we are lucky and the offer a crop mode like the Ricoh GR has, should be easy with an EVF.

It is indeed my favorite street FOV—and I suppose that's maybe the intended purpose of this camera? It's also the FOV of the iPhone camera, and I wonder if a few new photographers who got interested via their phone will consider this as a camera upgrade.

It just occurred to me: 28mm equivalent is probably now the most popular FOV in the world. So, maybe not so odd.

Perhaps 35 might still be and prevails as the most popular wide FOV. You make a good point that the urban hipster might be the target market.

If Leica is reading this thread they should note that a 28-50 mm spread is being promoted here on this thread. A 50 would also be good for me, and know that I am known to shoot two rigged Leicas with a 28-50 spread.

In regards to VF or no VF.

Using the Ricoh GR has taught me .... composing on a 3" screen is much nicer than at eye level for 28mm and wider.
Seeing the scene and it's components. Finding the eye point desired. Levelinging the horizon.... all are much more efficiently achieved on a digital "Ground Glass"......

Forget a built in VF, give me a hot shoe that I can put on my beloved CV bring line finder please and thank you.

I get much fewer strange looks when I use a bright line finder than my old cloth focusing hood from my 4x5.....

Why did they choose the 28 ? Why not the classic Leica 35 for their first FF fixed? Or for that matter why not bring back the 40mm from the C series ?

With the high performance of aps size sensors these days the prime reason to go to a larger sensor is for greater control of DOF. Going to 28mm seems counterintuitive in this regard.
Or maybe DOF is just my agenda 😱
