My new to me Leica IIIf BD and 135mm Hektor arrived yesterday in the mail! Does anyone know what the flash sync delay setting should be for electronic flash? Also fastest flash sync speed?
Thanks, Duane

My Leica Manual is at home, but I remember that the setting is completely opposite for the Red Dial and Black Dial models.

The delay setting on my Red Dial is 20 and the Black Dial (which I do not have) is 0 (zero). I don't know what the reason is, but I have used that setting for years and it has always produced good results, except for the time when I forgot and set the shutter speed too high. I typically use 1/25 for the shutter speed. I think I have been able to get away with 1/50 (1/60?). I know that 1/125 cuts of part of the image.

Frank, I was pretty certain that Paul says is correct and here is what my Leica Manual says:

Red Dial IIIf
Speed: 1 - 1/10 Sync Delay 2
1/50 Delay 20
T, 1 - 1/25 Delay 0
B Delay 2

That's what the book says but it confuses me because of the different delays for 1 - 1/10th and 1 - 1/25th. I've always used 1/50th and a delay of 20 for electronic flash and never worried about the rest of the settings.

Thanks. That jogs my memory. With the Leica you have a choice of sync speeds, but you have to reset the delay for each different shutter speed. I usually leave the camera set on 20 and use the 1/50 sec. speed. I once forgot and used 1/100. I only got 2/3 of the frame exposed as a result.

Thanks to all for their info... I was just thinking about it for my Zorki 2C. Has anyone ever tried playing with this for a pseudo "rear sync flash"?

Kin, obviously I'm no expert, but from what I know, the maximum flash sync delay (after the first curtain is fully open, is 20milliseconds on my Leica. Thsi is no where near the kind of time you need for the rear-curtain flash effects possible with modern SLR's and their dedicated flashes.

I just bought a III f BD from a forum member. It will arrive within the next two weeks. I choose the IIIf because of the flash sync. I want to use an electronic flash AND (just for the show) an old Agfa flash for bulbs. I already built a new starter-battery from knob-cells to get 22,5 Volt. Works great!

I was happy to find this old thread, but it does not answer my questions. It seems, one answer is missing.

Could anybody tell me, what delay-times I must use with 1/30 sec, 1/40, 1/60 sec (too short?) and B with an electronic flash and with flash bulbs? So there should be six (or eight with 1/60) different delay times in the worst case.

Again I hope for the knowledge of an expert.

As a counterpart I will show, how I dismantled an old Varta Pertrix 72 battery to fill it with new knob-cells. I will take pics an publish it in a new thread. I think a lot of old flash bulb units are powered by this batteries you can not get anymore. One helps another.

Greetings from Germany,

Thorsten

A couple of days ago I was was fooling around with my 3f while trying to check for shutter bounce. Am getting a dark strip down the right side of images and was trying to figure out if it was shutter speed related...

Rather than expose a test roll tried photographing the shutter in motion. Removed lens from 3f and mounted it on a tripod in my dark room. Mounted D300 with 60mm macro lens on second tripod and focused on shutter curtain. An electronic flash was connected to the 3f and aimed into the lens-less 3f.

With just the safe lights on I tripped the shutter on the D300, exposure was set for 5 seconds. This gave me time to reach over and trip the shutter on the 3f firing the flash.

Fooled around a bit and am not sure if I caught the bounce or not, lighting was not ideal. It needed some diffusion. What I did play with was the shutter speed and was able to confirm sync at 1/25". The attached photo is at 1/50" caught while the shutter was in motion. Certainly shows that 1/25" is need for electronic flash.

I imagine you could test sync speeds by putting a hunk of film in the gate to cover the black pressure plate and firing away. Not quite as easy as with an M's back door.

If you are using electronic flash set the dial to "2" and shutter speed to 1/30th.

In order to determine shutter speed/ dial number I would have to know what number flash bulb you will be using.. Let me know what number flash bulb and I'll look it up..

Colyn, must I take the 2 for 1/30 AND B with an electronic flash? Can I use other times?

The bulbs I want to use are Osram XM 1b Vacublitz, Guide-Number 36, X-Contact and Sylvania FB 1b, Guide-Number 32, X-Contact. Both to use with 1/25 to 1/30 sec.

Thanks!

According to the table 2 at 1/30th is the only combination..

I can't find either bulb listed in my table.

You might try contacting your local Leitz repair facility to see if they have the information..

Here are some better tables
Table 1-Common Flashbulbs and types, in groups for the other tables
Table 2-Flashbulb groups and guide numbers (for ASA 32!) this may help with the unknown bulbs
Table 3-Sync settings for RED dial f's
Table 4-Sync settings for BLACK dial f's (and converted c's)

There was another table in my focal guide for converted II's, III's and IIIa's with the dial. If anyone wants that table, I'd be happy to provide it too.
