Leica M-P : The preview lever returns to the M.240

Oh no ... I've only just bought an M240!

Does this mean I have to sell the other kidney?

Me too, used. I think Leica plans for these special versions well in advance as a way to extend the life of the tech. When everyone would have been very happy if this M-P version was what they started with. Clever.

Am liking the M though and really really like the cheaper Olympus VF-2 that I picked up that allows for spot-on focus with the longer lenses. My 75mm Summicron was really hard to hit focus with just the rangefinder.

screws? .... kidneys? .... buffers?. All I want to know is if this MP is any more quiet than the klunkety-klunk-klunk of the prior models ...... then I would consider the buy. O/w, ridiculous.

Priceless!
It's funny how the design team sees that space as empty. And has decided it must be filled.

You may very well get your Hex bolt after all!!

... perhaps you misread and it said New Leica M-5 ... and it is in fact simply a larger ugly version of the m240

Haha! Indeed. Indeed.

Priceless!

In their defense, they needed something to cover that adjustment hole, so why not a "modern update" to the old M cameras... But here's to hoping, right? :D

I like it...except for the 3rd eye pimple..but.. I could live w/it..definately..meditate w/it..
But I really wish one of the Japanese companies..would come out with a digital rangefinder soon..
Just a bit smaller..just a bit better..like in 4K video..+ articulated screen..I would be in heaven..
A Sony A7s rangefinder..would be perfect..

Hmm...I would wish quite bit better than the A7 series. I dislike the colour rendering and find the files too much work to get them decent. Nice backup to the M though.
May I remind you that the Nikon and Canon rangefinders were more expensive than Leica....

But somewhere along the line they (Leica) caught up, passed them and left them far behind! :p

In that year the same price range, ok. So? Not much support for an el-cheapo wish now, eh?

In spite of the fact I decided to drink the Leica kool aid and pony up for an M240 I don't really like what they're doing here. Remove the dot, (which I don't actually mind) increase the buffer and write speed and make a couple of other minor changes and charge a fair chunk more to own something that in reality has zero improvements for day to day shooting. You're paying the extra for perceived exclusivity with this new camera ... nothing more IMO.

I do like my 240 and have no regrets about the decision to buy it but the price, nearly eight grand in Oz, was a bloody rip off!

I have never understood this bitterness of Leica "enthusiasts" ... No one forced you to buy your M. If you were so offended by the price, why the heck did you buy it?

As I look at the specs for this camera, they increased the internal buffer size, added the (very expensive) sapphire LCD cover, and did some other incremental changes to improve the camera's responsiveness. It's not a whole lot, but things like that LCD cover are premium cost items that add to the price. I haven't seen one in the flesh, of course, the "bolt" is probably more noisome in the photographs than it is in person ... I kinda like it more than the slightly oversize red dot, but neither bugs me one way or the other. If I really didn't like it, I'd stick a piece of tape over it.

I'm pretty darn happy with the equipment I've got already. I could see selling the M9 and paying the difference to get this new M-P. I think the improvements over the M are actually worth it, and certainly the improvements (particularly to camera responsiveness) are a major step up from the M9.

No decisions for the moment. No need to rush. Next year will be soon enough for anything .. I have way more equipment than I need already. ;-)

More like they fell by the wayside and gave up. Leica survived on the RF market....
No, no, no. Everyone knows that people have a divine right to buy whatever cameras they want cameras at whatever price they like. Why doesn't the M240 cost 2500€? Or 250€? Or 25€? Clearly it's nothing to do with the cost of making high-quality cameras for a small market, or even staying in business. It's pure greed.

As is Ilford's pricing of film. And why aren't Durst and Meopta being forced to re-start enlarger production? It's all the fault of the wicked socialist EU.

Cheers,

R.

I'm not bitter Godfrey ... I'm expressing my views as is my right.

If you disagree with my opinions fine, I'm a big boy I can handle that, but lay off the accusations of being bitter ... thanks!

Dear Keith,

But surely, if you ponied up the eight grand, then there can only be two conclusions.

1: It wasn't a rip off. If it had been, you'd not have been prepared to pay it.

2: You are so stupid that you'll waste money on whatever catches your eye, as long as you've got the money in your pocket.

Now, I don't think many would subscribe to the latter, at least not if they're familiar with your posts here. This leaves only the former. More than you wanted to pay, yes, sure. But not "rip-off".

Cheers,

R.

Dear Roger,

Half the problem with you lot on the other half of this planet is you don't understand the Australian lingo and take it all way too literally ... you generally take yourselves way too seriously!

Saying that something you have just bought was a rip off is much the same as slapping your mate on the back at the local pub and saying "How ya goin' you old b a s t a r d?" When he's probably not old and probably not illegitimate.

"The camera was rather expensive" ... get my drift?

Dear Keith,

Damnably expensive. And of course there's the old story of the Australian cricket captain taking the English cricket captain into the changing room and saying, "This b*stard wants to know which of you b*stards called him a b*stard."

As for people taking themselves too seriously, there's an old saying involving pots and kettles...

Cheers,

R.
