LEICA M8, 1st GOLDEN TICKET!!!

Why would anyone work so hard to spoof our little group, even to get on an airplane to continue the spoof?

Then again, why are some folk so very sceptical?

One doesn't have to get on an airplane to continue this. One simply needs to already be on an airplane for other reasons and then continue to post.

Again, viewed as a spoof, I can see how it would be fun for some.

Sean, I'm very aware that "on the Internet, no one knows you're a dog," but I think you flatter all of us all by supposing someone would go to all this trouble for our benefit, to propagate the astonishing idea that . . . these cameras have begun to trickle out to Leica's "friends and family," who like them. Where's the fun in that?

To help those of us who haven't been playing with an M8 review model, would you mind identifying the telling wrong detail(s) that fuel your skepticism? I assume you have more than the fact that he had trouble opening DNG files in whatever program.

The way to refute Internet hoaxes is to connect the dots showing that they are false. I'm about as skeptical as they come and I would really welcome it if you could "show your work." So, no doubt, would others.

Hi Matthew,

When this all settles down, I'll explain why I knew this all to be a hoax. Some of the information relating to that realization did not come from this thread. Why do I have any interest in this? I guess it's like accidentally tuning into a really bad mystery movie, one wants to change the channel but for some reason he doesn't. This hoax caught my attention. To be sure, it's been a good distraction from prepping a lot of pictures from a shoot for a client.

To be clear, the musician Seal was given a loan of the M8. The leap from that fact to this thread is an interesting one. People who are willing to do their own detective work (for fun) can do that or just enjoy the ride. I've been amazed by the life it has taken on.

Cheers,

Sean

Wow ... this thread seems to contain less and less about photography as it progresses! As for entertainment value ... it's up there with anything I've watched on the box lately! (not hard)

As for Seal himself I was at my son's place yesterday and hey presto, what was on the box but a Seal video. It reminded me that I'm not actually a huge fan of his music as it comes across as a bit seamless to me. I bought a CD years ago, played it once and filed it!

But ... as 'Nanook Of The North' said "theres nothing like a good seal hunt to stir the blood."

 :D

Fellow Rffs

Well we are about to surpass some records here.

* At 16,200 views, and counting, this thread is approaching a record

* Last evening for a brief moment "Heidi Klum" was the most searched for celebrity on the Yahoo search engine. Makes you proud of the power of the Ranfinderforum !

* I bought tickets for the SEAL concert in Seattle on Nov 3 and before last friday I didn't even know who he was !!

* Pre-sales of M8s have zoomed in Latvia, Croata, and Bulgaria !!!

* I already have all the pumpkin pictures I need for Halloween !!!!

* I already have all the pictures of pregnant women I need for the birth of my next child !!!!

It's a good thing I'm on vacation.

Hi jlw,

The "informed opinions" with respect to the M8 are questionable but the entertainment value is present, for sure.

Cheers,

Sean

Well, until you get off your duff and write Part 2 of your review, we have to take whatever opinions we can get! :)

Also don't forget that in the mathematical structure of information theory, random noise has the highest "information content" of all!

Sean,

Credit where credit's due...you were right about the M8's DNG's and LR. But oh how VERY WRONG you are about CS3 and it being code named 'Red Pill'. I have it here on my laptop and have had it for the last three weeks since 'Vishal Khandpour' & 'John Nack' from 'Adobe' sent me the link for my download! CS3 (codenamed RED PILL) DOES EXIST!! You can print that mate!

PS, I find it strange that someone as well versed as you say you are doesn't know something as elementary as that. It isn't even a secret

-Charlie

Well, I know that RED PILL does exist, even if everything else in this thread is fuzzy and vague... :)

I just found out about this thread on another forum and just had to see what the big deal is.

Seal, can you provide proof that you are the real Seal and not someone who is just having us on?

Show us a photo of yourself with rff written on a paper :)

RL Biggs

Does it really matter who Charlie is? He has some interesting things to say about the M8, and I for one am more interested in that as opposed to 'who he may be', or what his day job is....

"Charlie,
As the owner of this place what I say should be good for the members and maybe they will drop the subject."

Hi Jorge, (aka Teflon Man)

I thought you'd already had your say ?

Did you not give credibility to 'Charlie' and verify he is who he said he is. Swayed hundreds of people I suspect in falling for this little scam.

Didn't those that said "show us a picture" in the early days become the subject of your angry little index finger "my finger is getting too hot .....". Abuse of power they used to call it.

That brought a barrage of abuse from the believers. Negativism was a new word for me.

All's well that ends well.

In truth you're doing a great job. :D

This has been very entertaining thread even though I haven’t learnt much about rangefinders as a newbe.

The funniest thing was on the first pages of the thread. People didn’t seem to doubt that man has a supermodel girlfriend but doubted seriously that he has a M8 :)

This has got to be one of the most confusing threads I have ever read... in any forum

I can't keep straight who is who; who has what camera; who is supposed to be posting what images.... in fact I am not sure where I am located and my head is ready to esplode

This also happens to be one of the most entertaining threads even if it is somewhat nonsensical

Yes, we covered the "red pill" thing earlier in the thread.

jlw,

I'd love to take a week on my duff some day but it won't be soon. I can't start testing, making sample pictures, etc. until I have the final firmware in an M8. I should have that very soon but it's not here yet. Once it is, I don't want to rush the article because that's not how I work. Probably what I'll do is to publish two installments on file quality. Part Two will be overall impressions and some example pictures. Part Three would then be more in depth comparison testing with the 5D and R-D1. I know that people are very eager to know more about the camera.

Meanwhile, there are a million other projects rolling along but I come to the forums to take a break now and again (often while a batch of RAW files are processing). In addition to the RR work, I still have client work, etc.

Cheers,

Sean

It's not really the best thread for learning anything about the M8 or rangefinders in general but fortunately, the rest of this site has information that will be useful for both purposes.

You know- I think the thread is a fake but it was written by the man himself ;) At any rate I looked up his website ( I had not heard of him before this thread, I must confess) but any celebrity musician that does not hide behind a Gigantikon DSLR for mucho sponsor dollars but uses a M7 and has a good photography section on his website, proving that he really knows how to use a camera should be a RFF member imo.

That would be great, Sean.

Obviously I'd love to look at samples with 100% crops, comparisons, etc., but I trust very much your opinion, to the point that it's probably more important for me to read your comments than looking at the actual samples, because they can't cover all the photographic situations in depth.
You should provide hundreds of DNG to let us know by ourselves what we can understand by simply reading your words...
And even if the case, I'd have to read 'em anyway because of your experience in photography.

On the front page of the PHOTO section of Seal's website, he is pictured with a Leica M body in hand, SF20 flash and what appears to be a Noctilux. He also has some nice images in the photo section.

Also, click HERE to see pictures of Seal and wife at a pumpkin patch. He is definitely carrying Leica M body.

Thanks Marcos. Right now, it looks like the 100% crops, etc. will be in Part Three but thanks for the interest in the narrative itself. Narrative is important also because the final proof is in the print and one can't show the print via the web. Also, as you say, one forms impressions after looking at hundreds of pictures (or more) and theses, of course, can't all be reproduced in the article.

Best,

Sean
