After seeing the Q, I really hope a 50mm version is coming.
John,
This is impressive. I'm hoping too. Could be a game changer for me where I would embrace color more fully with a paired "Q-28" and ""Q-50." Basically a tiny two camera kit/long-short pair.
Cal
Cal, it really is a beautiful camera that works the way I'd like a camera to work. I ordered one today. Oops. I too could get away with that combo for most of what I do.

I suspect I'll be picking one up myself before too long.

Well, I have the 40mm on my FF and I like it a lot. It is just that less wide than 35 and allows very condensed people pictures. A 50mm is (compared to the 50 mm) really a tele lens!
Interestingly, with the optical finder angle of M leica having got wider with the M6, the effect was that 50mm is really a big crop.

From the looks of the poll, they should release a 45mm and call it day! One of my favorite combos is a Contax G2+45mm.

John,
When is expected delivery?

I'd like them to do a Tri-Elmar version - 28-50-90
i'd go one step further, and wish for a Q-Vario. remember the digilux 2 with f2 and a macro setting?
Happy to see that Leica is considering other focal lengths:

It is indeed good to see that Leica is considering other Q focal lengths. The article mentions 35 and 50. Given the choice of those two I would vastly prefer 50mm. There are already plenty of wide angle cameras that have been designed and produced in recent years, but very few normal or longer.
Is it just me, or is it extremely difficult to generate a flattering portrait with a 28mm lens? 35mm is somewhat more manageable. I guess if you're doing reportage, and actually trying to make politicians look like clowns, wider could be better...

Yeah, I agree... this needs to happen. We need a fixed lens digital 50mm camera.

I find I can do it, but generally it has to include the torso of the individual as well.

I'd say 40mm, but I'd have to sell my car to buy one..
I'm forgetting about the Q and waiting for the 50mm version.

I simply did NOT vote!
In my opinion, it's pointless..
One has the frames for 35mm and 50mm, showing area outside.
Folks are still living in past of HCB with no cropping.
I was like that...but now cropping a way of life.
My P/S digital crop the image after lens can no longer zoom..
Quality is fine.
Leica I'm sure has no plans for "interchangeable" lens mount.
Nor another dedicated mount like Ricoh.
A sealed sensor-optical unit is the way to go.
Celebrate this new Leica, even if it loses the M heritage.
One gains anti shake, a great lens, small camera.
This. Love your verse format too.

How about a modern CM -- 40mm/2.4 collapsible Summarit that's flush with the body when powered down?

The closest you'll get to this these days is the X model.

I love the look of the Q. It truly is a beautiful camera. But I have little use for 28mm lenses, no matter how good they may be. So I have voted for a 50mm lens as my preference. In reality I think I would almost as often like a 75mm lens given my style of shooting, but have to be realistic. A 50mm is sometimes needed, but in better than 85% of cases that's about as far as I need to go towards the wide end of the spectrum. I might use a 35mm or even a 28mm lens maybe 15% of the time.

Surprised and happy to see so many votes for 40mm. It's probably the perfect FL for this camera.
I'd settle for a 40mm model, but would rather have 45mm-50mm.

There are more than 200 responses to the poll now. Just for fun, let's compute the geometric average of all the results. I get (24^6*35^46*40^64*50^78*75^8)^(1/202) = 42.7mm, almost exactly equal to the diagonal dimension of the format.
Considering the possibilities with the framelines and cropping a bit further, it seems that a 40mm (or 43mm if you like) version of this camera could be very sweet.
The framelines and cropping could be set with firmware updates, or could be user selectable. Imagine having the option of square format framelines at 58mm or 70mm equivalent (whatever you like, really) for the purpose of composing portraits!
