Is there a way to search on the full serial number on eBay and other marketplaces to see if it ever surfaced for sale?

I think it is easier to buy a black camera and not first buying a chrome one and sending it to Shintaro. Everybody knows that he doesn't paint cameras anymore.

Yes, everyone knows, but that wasn’t the case 10 years ago. The complaints about long waiting, lack of communication and even years of silence was known, though.

O yes, it was. He made a few M2's in black around 2003 - and earlier - only for himself. Then happened one of those infame internet hypes. People from all over the world thought that they could get a black painted camera from him. Funny. They didn't ask him, they just send him their camera.

He painted my camera. Sent him an Email, he responded, told me where to send the camera, and instructions to wire the funds for the job. Almost a year later I emailed him about the work- he told me it was finished and he has lost my address. I sent him the address, next action- the camera showed up at the Post Office. The OP Emailed Shintaro in advance, got instructions for sending the funds- which was the standard operating procedure for Shintaro.

Dude, the onus is on you to manage your expectations.
Every single independent camera repair guy/gal in the world is bad at communications and job management. Except, maybe, YY. This is known.

maybe they can help dont know if there is a time limit, or if it was more recent the banks can do a charge back.
The whole black paint thing back then was pretty desperate seems like its a bit easier now, mind you a black paint M2 ten years ago could probably be bought for what a chrome plus repaint costs today.

Funds were sent to Shintaro via Bank Wire.
I doubt that many financial institutions would go back 10 years to reverse a charge.

A decade on, I wouldn’t hold out a lot of hope for any satisfactory resolution. What a shame.

I can vouch for Alex. He and a long list of people have been screwed out their cameras. Shintaro was a friend of mine by way of Tom A and I have a bad feeling he did this on purpose. You guys with a claim need to gather your evidence and file a police report in Tokyo.

Send your camera to well-established firms like Kanto Camera and be very careful to send it to individuals, even those with stellar technical skills. Unfortunately, human vanity and greed can corrupt even the best technician.

Tks for your support and help, Shintaro replied to my FB message to him last week and mentioned to me that my camera has been shipped back to me couple of days ago also providing the tracking number. I am looking forward to see my camera at my doorway soon.
I will let you know once the camera is back after this ten years journey.

10+ years is totally unacceptable for any service (repair or repaint).
I find 18+ months is totally unacceptable also, but 10 years takes the cake!
I have had excellent service on repaints from Aaron at Camerakote.

He uses cerakote based paint, and has done some fantastic work on Leica’s, Rollei’s, Nikon’s and assorted cameras and lenses. 😎
