No, I don't think he is but when I last spoke to him he implied that he was semi retired...ish.
Yes, this was my experience too. Peter and Malcolm are excellent technicians and very generous with thier knowledge. Both have talked me through fixing small problems by telephone.

The 'old' guys are getting harder to find or make contact with and when contacted can have long lead times.
Flavour of the month would appear to be: https://www.cameraworks-uk.com/
I've never used them but they have been mentioned often here.
Alan does excellent work. I had him do a special project for me. He is also making new parts (frame masks for the M3, titanium shutters for the M bodies) that no one else offers, and his repainting services are unparalleled.
If I were in the UK, I would use him for all of my Leica repair, and for full restoration, I would not hesitate sending him a camera from anywhere.

This is encouraging .
I have an M3 that requires a bit of work and Camera Works are only about 40 -50 miles from me.

Another UK vote for Mr Starkie, painted an M2 for me with outstanding results and promptly with good communication. I didn't have a CLA at the time as it was done about 5/7 years back by Leica (in the UK just before all repairs were repatriated) but I asked if they saw anything let me know. They did, a small part was missing in the rangefinder mechanism, they replaced it FOC.
Also later sent in a Cosina/Voigtlander Nikon Rangefinder fit lens that was not focussing properly, a screw had literally come loose, that another well regarded repairman had found no fault with.

I was told Malcolm Taylor had fully retired a few months ago, good to hear he's still semi-active. He did a great job on reviving a 5cm Hektor for me.
The Starkies have rebuild and painted a Leica IIIc for me. Very well done.

Malcolm Taylor has very kindly just sorted out a Mountain Elmar for me - its a lenshead in a 'custom mount' but wouldn't focus to infinity. Now its back its stunningly good - far better than I had anticipated for a 1933 lens and actually can hold its own on a Sony A7II surprisingly well.

Camserve in East Sussex serviced my iiic and summar lens. A later problem was fixed with no problem and no charge. The IIIc has been been my return to film photography after about 30 years and I'm really enjoying the experience. Knowing there are people out there who can still fix old cameras is a real boon.

These guys are excellent - rumour has it that Leica UK use them too. But don't tell anyone I told you......

Another vote for Newton Ellis.
My Minolta CLE developed an issue where the frame lines were stuck. Sent it off to Newton Ellis and it was fixed, serviced and had the rangefinder aligned. Reasonable price for the work and camera returned within two weeks (including delivery both ways).

I would say Cameraworks UK or in Spain there is a good one in Kamaras.es (Juan Gambin)
