Leica M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
This surely must be one of the worst shown here...ever!

49xxx, stipped and repainted with something that is falling off, shiny chrome knobs, what more could you want?

I bought it for the lens, a very nice red scale Elmar that has gone somewhere more appropriate.

Look at the film loading label. OK, so it's been overpainted too....but adding this was part of the conversion process.

Most Is I have looked at do not have one. I'm not too sure what model would have the label held on by two screws, see the holes for them in the photo.

The backing plate for the label has the normal four screws but because the camera is/was an early I it has the little cut out to clear the internal screw at the bottom of the lens. I haven't seen this before.

As Erik says, time for some research on film labels...!

I've never seen this style of film loading label. In fact I only know post war ones.
It must have been a camera for the German market, as there is no text in English.

I'm trying to make some sense of the different film loading label variations, call me sad but it is the sort of thing that gets my interest going. However I have sold many of my cameras and most of those that I have kept are conversions.

Some generalisations ready for contradiction by anyone who is interested:

Cameras with 'f' types syncronisation have labels on the shutter casing. Some converted cameras fitted with 'f' type syncronisation have the same, some do not...there are seem to be two sizes

IIIc has the label on the inside of the camera base plate. If you ever feel that the back of your IIIc pops in and out it might be because this is not adjusted correctly. Some of the labels have a lip that helps with the location of the back.

II and III have the label on the base plate. Graphics vary.

I and early II do not have the label. Note that they have a small metal bar that acts as a support for the back as mentioned above.

Actually graphics vary as do language, most are held on by a small frame attached by four screws.

You've got a very nice II already, you don't want this, it probably has some sort of contagious infection.

Actually it has an excellent rangefinder that is spot on, very distinct and has the yellow glass. The shutter is fine and the first film was 100% so someone must have looked after its insides!

I was wondering whether to do anything with it. I may, I may not..but I have been expirmenting with chemically blackening brass. You can buy little kits from model railway suppliers and the result is halfway decent.

Painting is obviously out of the question, the 'bizmuth/Woods Metal thing is way beyond me.

Who knows?

As you can see I have not taken the M9 plunge...

well, I used to have a minty example of I, II and III all in super black paint. Now I have the II and it's starting to get lonely..... 😉

I would have jumped for the M9, but my "fighting fund" seems to have evaporated somewhat - I wonder where it went?
 
Some pics of my 49' IIIc which was converted into a IIIf. Also has the factory engraving on the bottom side of the body. Its still in very very good shape and works fine for me!

You mean 'my' III John...? Sorry for your loss, but I'm enjoying it thoroughly 😉. Got another one recently, equally nice. Perhaps I'll pass one on, one of these days. If you're interested, let me know.

Hi Huub,

Well, you know I should never have split up that little family group. I regret it now, but I sometimes vascillate (sp?) over these things. I already bought back a favourite II from Dralowid. If i have the funds, i might be interested...

As to the quantity of Cervesa, you are probably right but, well, moderation in all things :angel:

I think it's a bit like the stock market - for every trade there is a buyer and a seller - and they both believe they have been astute..........
 
Unusual to see a shutter release button with a spot on it on a conversion like this.

Eric, yes an earlier conversion, the accesory shoe is not 'proud' of the top surface. Ties in with your comment about engraving. Nice to see strap lugs fitted and diopter rangefinder adjustment (with short 'return').

I've understood from posters over at the L forum that the shutter dial is a smaller kind than that which Leica II bodies ordinarily were fitted with.

The logo resembles the logo on the IIIc. After the M3 appeared in 1954, the style of the lettering on the conversions changed. The new logo looks like the one on the IIIg.

Because of the synch-mechanism the accessory-shoe was placed a bit higher on later conversions. That is what Michael means with being "proud".

The dot on the release button helps to see if there is any film on the sprockets wile rewinding the film. I never saw a dot on a release button of a conversion before.

The speed-selector is in fact not right for a II. It reads "1-20", but there are no long speeds. It should read only "20".

It is a very beautiful camera.

This one has just had its shutter blinds replaced, the old ones looked like they had been painted with a rubber solution.

The conversion uses the 'higher' top housing (see screw by shutter dial) and I think uses the original body since the depression milled for a circular pressure plate has been machined out to take the later type.

f16 coated Elmar seems appropriate and I am quite proud of the black hood...


Don't throw old cases away, once they have fallen apart they have another life as a half case!
