Hey, I'm looking for an alternative to the official SOOMP Leica hood. First off it's really big, secondly it's expensive, one in bad condition is still 80 on ebay. I'm just looking for something cheap that fits, it doesn't need to be made by Leica.

I use a common Kodak series VI lens hood with a Kodak 13/32" dia. slip on adapter on my Summar lens.
you can use a Tiffen , Walz or a Canon series VI hood just as well with the slip on Kodak 13/32" dia. adapter.

The 50/90/135 works great. FICUS I think.
Little shorter the ring type / clamp on for 50 & 35.
36/39 adapter + any number of Leica shades for 50 mm lenses.
Try Central Camera in Chicago if you want to try the push on stuff in other post. They also have lots of old Leica accesories. Also Sam at Leica Connection LLC.
Camera Quest used to have or still has a push on knock off of the ring band clamp on made by Leitz. This is the cheapest possible solution.

I haven't used my Summar for many years, but I still have the Kodak series VI with the adapter. Always seemed to work great, when I actually remembered to use it. The additional benefit is that one can obtain and use modern filters... I have a pre-war Polaroid filter to fit it.

FIKUS adjustable hood is nice and tight at the shortest setting, doesn't vignette, and is useful for 90 and 135mm lenses as well! Some rarer ones are even labeled for the Summar.
Getting a SOOMP at a reasonable price is hard.
If the Summar has internal haze, paying to get it cleaned is a better investment than the more expensive SOOMP shade. A Summar should look water clear if clean.

If I remember correctly it's 36mm threads. I used to screw a UV filter into mine because the Summars are notorious for having soft glass that's easily scratched, and I bought a 36mm screw in slotted hood from heavystar. Looked neat and was a cheap way to go. You could always use a step up ring if you already have a bigger hood.

the Summar uses 34mm dia. screw in threads filters and hoods.

I have a Leitz 36mm push-on to 39mm threaded filter adapter, with an E-39 "90 Elmar /135 Hektor" screw-in hood from Heavystar on eBay. It is slightly larger in diamter, but the same depth as my FIKUS when collapsed. ( No evidence of vignetting.)
I have found that this hood / filter adapter works fine on my 50 Summars & Elmar, and even my 35 Elmar.
I believe the hood cost $12.

Also, if you have the A-36 to E-39 filter adapter ring, then you can mount the barndoor hood for the Summitar / Summicron, if you have those lying around.

I ended up buying a Leica FIKUS for $50 on ebay. It's both smaller and cheaper than the summar hood, additionally it'll work with other lens lengths that I might buy in the future.

That seems to be a reasonable deal, based on prices I was seeing when I was chasing a FIKUS about six months ago.

Does the FISON work with the Summar? I just got a very clean-looking Summar on eBay and am now sorting through the hood possibilities...more alternatives would be great...

Yes, a FISON will work. The only problem that I ran into with a FISON and my Summar is that it can be pulled off, even if you have the thumbscrew turned down tight.

I was lucky and years ago when there were still one or two old fashioned camera stores around the owner of one used to let me rummage around in his box of "stuff" I found many accessories that could not be found elsewhere and most of them he sold to me for only a few bucks. Long story short in one of these forays I found a Walz hood for a Summarit and one for a Summar. Both are small. elegant and nicely made. You never know such after market hoods do turn up from time to time if you keep your eyes open.

the hood works great, it fits snug enough if you tighten it a lot. I even found that a 43mm lens cap works on the hood. On the downside it blocks a bit of the view from the viewfinder.

I had a SOOMP hood for my Summar but never used it and never had any problems with flare. Having said that, my Summar was crystal clean and had been coated at a later date, so obviously that would help.
When I sold the SOOMP I was quite surprised by just how much money I got for it. Apparently it was the 'rarer' Leitz New York version.

Let me refer to this thread: The Ultimate thread on Summitar hood alternatives. I have not shot much with my Summitar yet, but it's clean and seems also coated at a later date so if seems to perform good enough even without a hood.
