Yes that's right, just velcro. I took the shoe off (that was hard as the screws were almost impossible to turn!) and used strong-ish black velcro. It's a very lightweight meter so it's very secure and can easily be removed to turn the rewind crank.

The meter works well, I prefer it to a built in one because with the VCII I can see at a glance other exposure/shutter speed combinations.
