Yeah,

that must have taken him quite some time to sand that all off.

It's easy to spot from the aligned scratches on the metal and the even wear of black chrome, through nickel and finally brass that this was a sandpaper job. Also, it's worn in places were normal use wouldn't wear like this.

Now don't get me wrong, anybody can pimp their cameras up all they want, sand 'em down to tinfoil-thin brass FAIC. I'm not saying that a 'truly-worn' camera owns more merit, not even implying it. I'm just sayin this camera was treated with sandpaper and that natural wear looks different.

Perfect candidate for a black re-paint, this camera:p
 
Well I don't know Johan. I do agree it'll take a lot of usage to wear through all those materials but I don't doubt that it can be done.

I'd certainly be interested in finding out more about this camera and the photographer. With kit like that he or she must be quite a character :)
 
Yeah...that does look like it's been sanded down. Frankly speaking, I cannot understand why anyone would want that sort of faux brassing.
 
I will see him again in a week or two and ask for more details about the wear. As far as the paint goes he is very interested in train graffiti and everything he painted on the camera is something he saw painted on a train. He painted the camera to please himself and I am sure he could care less what we might think and before you write him off as a complete nut job he has several other M and R cameras all in immaculate condition but this is the camera he used the most as he was not afraid of what might happen to it. having used the camera myself I can vouch for what superb mechanical condition it is and what a pleasure it is to shoot with. One of the reasons he stopped over was to drop off a camera that he wanted me to try out, shoot a few rolls
through, and see what I thought about it. He is suffering from macular degeneration and his film cameras don't get as much use as he would like. I will not show it here but this link will take you two pictures of it.

It has been special made for me by aki-asahi.com.
The color ist not listested at the standard shop. You have to email him and he cut it for you! The service was superb. The name of my leather is "Flat Camel"

First time post but a long time lurker. Now it is time for me to add my leica to this thread as an official leica owner.

Leica M3 from 1957 and CZJ sonnar f1.5 from 1936

I accidentally won the lens... By what I mean: The auction was in GBP and I bid in american dollars without realising that what I bid was in gbp. So, I bid more than I wanted to bid for it. The auction was a hot one! It went up to 64 bids before it ended. After I won and got it- I sent it to henry and he commented on how great in condition the lens is for being 77 years old! It had some fungus and oil on blades but henry gave it a full treatment. All I can say now... It just looks great on my leica. ;)
