London Riots

Its an absolute disgrace. These kids have no idea what this is doing to THEIR communities. They feel like they are above the law. The police need to sort their strategies and stop the looting with force. Looting and Burning peoples houses and businesses to the ground is not protesting its just disgusting.
I guess Im not much older than the majority of people reported to be doing this and the mentality is lost on me.
Society is dead in England

Crap. Came home to a riot outside my flat. Looters and arsonists on my street. Police helicopters still overhead here in Hackney. Have packed my rangefinders and passport in case of a quick getaway.

You have some good shots posted in the gallery - excellent!

Here in Philly we have flash mobs, which in fact ARE scheduled riots, and rather than targeting shops it is individuals getting their heads cracked. At this point I feel you Brits have have the upper hand, civilization-wise .

Don`t know about that :)
Lots of games being played out no doubt.
The police will be holding back slightly in order to claim they need more resources and shouldn`t be subject to any austerity cuts .
The usual chancers will be taking advantage of the situation and claiming that it`s all part of some political movement whilst filling there pockets with anything they can get their hands on.
It`s a symbiotic relationship until the crackdown .

something small and discreet. and dare i say it ... automatic?
i saw a guy get his canon 5d ripped away from him and a news camaraman have his camera smashed,

I know Vobluda - I'm worried about Trotters Trading too ;-)

Policemen and women are doing everything they can, they've pulled in extra officers from other counties and they're working bloody hard - it's just that there are so many rioters who are co-ordinating very efficently.

Hope last night was the end of it, can't imagine what it is really like from the quiet of Basingstoke .

I have read some comment on BBC on-line that they (rioters) co-ordinate using Blackberry and not Twitter but nevertheless can`t really believe what I read and see ...

Theses youths may not be Egyptians or Libyans but are disaffected nevertheless. Don't brand them all as criminals because of the looting. The Brits did support Arab Spring didn't they?

It is very different Rayt. The youths of the Arab Springs were protesting for Independence and democracy. The youths of London were looting for sneakers, beer and mobile phones. Never thought I'd do it, but I went out of my way to speak to a police man in Hackney this morning to say thanks for working all night last night. He seemed genuinely touched that a resident would do that.

so glad my big brother is down in deepest darkest africa this week or they'd have him out on the streets. I always think 'that's somebody's son, father, brother, husband' (or of course wife, sister, mother) having bricks hurled at them. It's heartbreaking. However, have you seen the campaign 'riot cleanup' that has been launched - it's touching. If I weren't stuck in Bristol today - I think that's where your cameras need to be pointed.

I still find it shocking and hope that the one benefit of ubiquitous surveillance is that most perps will be on CCTV/media/police camera footage and that the vast majority will face justice and the shame they deserve. If ever there was a case of needing to bring back the stocks so people could face the the community they have wronged....

There was a protest on Friday evening because of the way the Police dealt with the family of the man shot dead.

But everything since then has just been criminality.

That's what I thought when I heard about #riotcleanup!

You're right and this is very important to remember. While surely no one here would condone that kind of behaviour one still has to question a society where so many young people feel like they have to loot and create chaos. They might be scumbags and criminals but why are there so many young scumbags and criminals in London? Riots of this scale always have a political component and ascerting this does not mean that one supports the actions of the rioters.

Nice that the PM finally decided to come back from holiday and take a look... There will be 16000 coppers in London soon and I assume many are coming from other regions of the country. It seems that the police just can't cope with the situation but it says in the Guardian this morning that there are "no current plans to involve the armed forces".

Over on this side of the pond they sometimes bring in the National Guard in emergencies of all kinds and because they are local the action is quick and effective (the Guard is a sort of citizen army, well trained and part of the country's reserve military force).

Not sure why the UK govt. doesn't want to quell this chaos ASAP.

saw a phone video footage on bbc this morning:

a twelve year old kid shouted at the bbc cameraman "we're claiming our taxes back!". wtf?
