After some thinking, rather than spending a few hundred dollars on a scanner I'd rather use what I already have, which is my dslr and 100mm macro, for scanning negatives. I've been searching around and brainstorming ideas for a good mix of inexpensive but not too ghetto. The one thing I'm unclear about is what to use for a negative holder and where to source one. I want something that will be relatively easy to switch from frame to frame, will accept short strips, and something that won't scratch the negatives easily. As I'm not familiar with film, I really have no idea where to find such a thing.

thanks,

Go to ebay and look up "slide duplicator". They were these lens extension things you put on a macro lens then pointed the contraption with slide in it at a light & took the photo. They are probably close to free for even the best quality models.

Looking into them I don't think a slide converter will work for me due to the fact that my slr (20d) has a cropped sensor. So my 100mm macro is really 160mm equivalent. I'd have the same issue with anything that doesn't use a lens. I'd be ok if I had a zoom lens. I'd also like to avoid anything with optics in it, since it would just degrade the 'scan'. Unless there's a different type I haven't seen. Any other suggestions?
