Looking for the "old look" in a 50mm

Summilux 50mm f/1.4 II, Leica M3, TriX printed on Ilford IVMG fb.

Summar or collapsible chron. Both tend to be soft wide open. Depends on how clean the lens is regarding that Leica glow (flare) thing. I've never quite understood that part.

I'll add another vote for the Elmar f/2.8, I've been enjoying the look I'm getting from it in the November light in Puget Sound.

The Summar is it....and affordable! However, the old look is a factor of the fil you use too. Try Lucky 100 or Fomapan 400.

I think Bill is correct: choice of film and developer also makes a difference. There is a photographer who posts a lot on flickr named Stephane Marco, who is achieving a classic look using Tri-X and older lenses like the Elmar 50/3.5 and Summar. Not sure he is a member here. His flickr site is worth a look. Here's a link to his photos taken w/ the chrome Elmar 50/3.5:

The collapsable Elmar 50/2.8 is the only old 50 I have, but I quite like the look on my Lumix G1. One from today, a Spring-like day in DC:
