Thought I'd give it a test roll, since my mum said I can have it, and why waste a camera??

A few problems:

-One of the little knobs is missing (and so the spool holder at the bottom is a bit dodgy) - I used a tiny bit of of a film canister lid to hold the metal piece in place, but the tiny ball bearing is missing (the bit that makes it click into place)

-I just developed the film, and all the pics are off-centre. Not in the images but the actual negatives are to the left (gloss side up).

-The tiny magnifier was stuck, and I only realised it was there when I finished the film!!

This happen to anyone else? It shouldn't make much difference, but its annoying all the same.

Will post some pictures once the film dries.

Here we go:

I'm actually really proud of this photo:

I love the distortion effect in the background, but otherwise pretty poor - not even properly focused!

These two are almost the same photo, just altering what's in focus, and composition.

As you may notice, everything is at f/4.5 or f/5.6 ... can't remember which is f/8. So if anyone wants to say these cameras are a hunk-a-junk, they're probably right. And they're awful to use, but acceptible results are not impossible 😉

Nice job, Ash. I love my 166U; not a bad lens and far better than a camera made out of Tupperware has any right to be. My negatives all came out fine and centered, so I can't help you with that. Do you have a 645 mask installed or did you do some heavey cropping on the sides?

The non-central neg spacing is down to this dodgy screw in the side I think, and the cropping is due to the scanner. I lose a small percentage since the scanner is 35mm and 35mm slide. It's not meant to scan 120, so I have to accept a bit of cropping as I push its limits.

I recon its time to fix the old girl up, need to look at the bits that are missing / incomplete and see about making a new parts as needed. Now where did I put mine?

Scanning is a pain for any low light shot, I have had lots of fun trying it. One of the reasons I still love the darkroom. (note to self, re-install blackout material in kitchen)

I need a miniature ball-bearing.. and one new knob for the bottom 120-spool holder. Then she'll be fully usable 😉

Ash

You may need a light baffle inside camera or a lens hood.

Scrap a disc drive from a PC for a small ball bearing or two.
