M 8 value ?

I '' lost '' my month-and-a-bit-old , M8 today ...

I have been taking it to London just because I can ... but then it wasn't in any of the offices that i go to ... and not at home ...

OK , I am getting older , but memory with ASd is kinda fragmented ... always has been ...

it was in [ hidden ] the car , I had dee-cided that it was too hectic a day for me to keep tabs on my baby , but it was the M 8 which triggered the memory , so terrible anxiety all the way home ...

I was devastated about the seeming loss - not the money at all [ !!!! ] ...
but a companion which has opened up a way of seeing , which cuts through the Autisic haze / mind astigmatism - and also creates a dee-light in dreaming of vintage Leica lenses , of my familiar Rokkors given a new lease of life , of learning all over again about control of my snapshots , of a familiar design icon , simple and effective , which grants me access to instant picture taking ...
not to mention rambling on in this forum !

In a month , my M 8 has become a light in a relentless darkness of crazee head stuff !

I don't care a damn about whether an SLR at a fraction of the cost is '' better '' ,
[ the M 8 is best for ME ] or if it will be rapidly ovetaken by new technology ... if expensive Leica glass walks all over my vintage lenses , and Russian relics , or 70,s Rokkors are supposedly poor substitutes ...

I have woken to the true value of my window on the world - it's priceless for ME .

I had my M8 for about a month and after taking it to a concert, I discovered that the LCD was shattered. Might have happened in my soft case when it crushed into a loose lens-----but that's a guess. This happened one week before a hiking vacation in Japan (Nakasendo Way). So I had to take my heavy SLR, and I chose just one zoom (24-105) to go along. Tough on the back, conspicuous even in a camera-shooting culture, and not an M8.

Hardly a photo shot without wishing for the M8, even though I probably got some shots that the M8 would have missed.

For years I've spent a little over 100 USD for extra camera insurance. When I got the M8, I depreciated the old gear and added the new. So insurance covered the $350 for repair (and would have covered total loss). It was a small compensation for the lost use of the camera, but took away a little of of the sting.

I can relate! After adding my M8 and Leica lens to my non-deductible “personal articles” insurance policy I felt soOoo much better and it does provide a very secure feeling.

😕 I'm not sure, after reading your post, exactly what happened. Did you misplace your camera? Was it stolen? If it was stolen did you file a police report and notify all the local camera stores and pawn shops with the serial number in case someone tries to fence it? Our store caught two thieves who stole gear that the owners reported to us and the owner got his gear back. The value of a used M8 is still around $4,600 in good shape. Is it insured? If it is then you need to file a police report and dig out your receipts so you can file a claim. Start looking on eBay to see if it shows up there and check local sales venues such as Craigs list. There are not many used M8's for sale out there so it would really stand out.

Stolen ones are basically worthless, as all M8's are registered at Leica, so as soon as it needs some kind of service it will be found out. Clued up thieves know that and fences certainly do. They prefer "prosumer" DSLR's and point-and-shoots.

hi japp ... i am not certain that I trust the average , thick , opportunist London thief to be aware or this - so i shall take a bit more care to ensure that i know where it is at all times !

It would have been better to have left out the red dot and the M 8 logo - 'cos from a casual glance, a chrome M 8 looks much like an old Leica from the 50s .

I am delighted that this was just a scare and that your M8 is safe with you. I hope that you have put insurance on it.

In anticipation of a trip to Mexico I added my M8 and a half dozen lenses to my insurance policy on a separate valuable personal property schedule. All that was required were serial numbers and a statement of value for each item.

Total premium, no deductible and coverage for any loss or damage, will cost me slightly less than 1.4% of the declared value per year. For example, a $10,000 kit could be insured against all perils for an annual premium of $140, more or less. Of course, that's my insurance company for my location.

All in all, I'll sleep way better.

Noticed an ad on eBay recently asking for the return of an M8 stolen from a London pub. He was offering a substantial award for its return.

I guess the M8 is quite knickable!

The trouble is that ANYTHING is knickable in a pub or from the car, even in a controlled public place. Addicts needing to finance their addiction don't concern themselves with whether Leica have serial numbers on file, fences will buy or not (someone will ... especially since it's all pennies on the dollar).

Heck, a friend of mine had his entire camera bag stolen from the locked boot of a car at a motorway service station in the UK. That was in a crowded area during the middle of the day. Unbelievably he got it all back a few weeks later when the perps tried this trick one time too many and got nicked. 🙂
