Chrome guy here. My favorite cameras are chrome (Leica M6, Rolleiflex SL35E,SL66 and Olympus OM1).

I have both cameras. I find I pick up the black chrome M4 more often. If you pick up a black chrome from Midland they only made 500 cameras. Late serial numbers also. Much newer than the BP M2. Both are fine cameras.

I would have stuck with the M6. I bought a chrome M4 on an impulse after using my M6 for more than a decade, but the M4 never really got used and so it was traded in.

If you are happy with the knob rewind and loading the film by attaching it to a removable spool, then stick with the M2. The M4 is quicker to load and much faster to rewind unless you add a folding lever to the M2 rewind knob.

Thanks, I tend to work slowly, so loading and rewinding is no problem.

Something I don't ever see mentioned, but which worries me, is how hot a black camera can get in the sun. Here at high altitudes in the desert Southwest, the rule is Sunny 22 rather than Sunny 16 for midday exposure, and in my experience, a black camera in that kind of intense sunlight can become hot enough to the touch to make me very concerned about the electronics and lubricants. Much as I prefer the look of BP or BC, I purchase equipment in silver chrome for that reason. Is this fear unwarranted? Anyone have some solid information about this?

I don't think so. Makes sense. I've never seen a study on cameras per se, but did come across these (seems white/silver color *is* cooler - not to be confused with more hip 🙂)
