I have a really nice strap and want to use on my M5. However, it has split rings and this would not be easy on the black paint or lugs. Is there a good way to convert the strap with a commercial solution ?

I am in the same boat here: a while ago I purchased a Leica leather strap for one of my M5 bodies (which currently has an Optech strap), only to find that the Leica strap has rings for eyelets. Even removing the rings, the strap itself was too thick to slip under the lugs. I have decided to replace the strap in another of my cameras some time later instead, because the M5 is a bit too delicate when it comes to these things.

Now... when you say commercial solution, what exactly do you mean?

If the strap is thin enough to pass through the spaces on the M5 lugs, you could cut the strap and secure the ends with Chicago screws.

When my father and I made my camera straps the style at the time was to have a small length of something (in our case leather) that had split rings on camera side and a solid ring on the top. You could build a strap extension that loops through the lugs on the M5 and then a Chicago Screw or a Rivet (more permanent) to keep it in place at the top. I'd go sewing them in place myself, flat nylon ribbon (black or favorite color), strong thread (almost sail quality).

The straps we made had snap hooks to connect to the extensions. Worked great for years of carrying SLRs. When I switched to RF I did the same thing but sewed a couple of extensions together from nylon strapping rather than leather. Went with a thinner strap (rather than 1 1/2 inch leather) then too.

Check with Gordy of Gordy Straps (advertises here) for a pre-made products. Never owned a CL/M5 so never went down the path you are one.

Good luck.

I have an M5 and use Luigi's (luigicases.com) essential strap. No rings at all, and still supple after 10 years or so.

You could make your own of this style very easily - it might not be detailed as well as Luigi's though.

Here's a pic from his website

Picture with it on your camera please! My Gariz strap is pretty short so the camera can only be worn over my neck, hanging down my chest.
I like to hang them over neck/shoulder so it is on one's side.

I purchased Harry Benz B strap 120cm. There is no way I am going to cut it and try to kluge. I thought there might be some sort of short high end thingy I could slip through the end of the strap after removing the ring and tie it through the lugs. It makes no sense to attach split rings to these lugs. If it doesn't work, it goeson the M3 or CLE.

I use a Gariz strap on my M5. Nice n soft and has worn well over the years.

The Gariz strap is nice. Iim kind of wondering about that case. Also looks nice and has the correct cutouts for the two end strap lugs. I would like a longer strap to wear over neck/shoulder.

Hap. Love those Harry Benz straps. I have a couple myself. They seem like an odd match for the M5 though (with the extra bulk by the split rings)

Huss, The standard length is about 37” long, lug to lug, according to the specs, should be longer than the Gariz, maybe long enough to hang cross shoulder. But, they can make them custom length.
Maybe I have found my M5 strap.

Pro cheap basket tip... the Leica AF-C1 aka Minolta AF Tele Super uses the same type of strap as the Leica M5. You can buy a broken Minolta on ebay with strap for $5-$10. Which means you have a strap for the M5 for $5- $10.
If you want to splurge, you can have a working (and a very good camera) Minolta for $20 which means you got a strap for your M5 plus a free camera!

Do you have any problems with the velcro on your Zhou M5 case? I bought one and returned it as the velcro regularly came undone and the case would fall off. I really liked the case otherwise and in fact bought a case from him for an M2. I'm just wondering if Mr. Zhou improved the hook and loop attachment, or perhaps I just got one that didn't function properly.

Never had a problem and I have Zhou cases on my M3, M7, M5, Fuji TX-2 and CLE (before sold).
You must have had a one off.
