I only used to pay any real attention to the meter in my M6 (and MP) when shooting slides and that was only to keep the highlights. However, it can be a distraction if you let it be.
As an aside, my step son (16) had to shoot 3 rolls of B&W for the advanced photography course he is doing from this month. I lent him my Canon F1, but the meter battery died after the first couple of shots, so I lent him my hand held meter and explained the sunny 16 approach to him. By the third roll he wasn't using any meter, just sunny 16 and his guesses checked out against my meter. How cool is that.
