M6 TTL or MP

Black Chrome -like as in the M6 and M7 top covers- via a la carte is brass REALLY? Damn. Now thats where its at, and here was me thinking that I might get a regular MP from Tristatecamera.com for "cheap", and now I want the a la carte because of this very fact... Are you SURE about this? I will make a purchase soon and I want to know before I customize my machine and figure it out after I get it.. and then have to pay a whopping $25 for a roll of Gaffers tape...........


The reason I asked about Tristatecameras.com is because there are firm out there who are known for selling gear at much deflated prices but upon sale will announce that it comes only as the body -no box or warantee, or caps etc and then will try to force feed you with the rest of the package for vastly inflated prices for the rest of the package (which you should already be getting with the item), and sell you their warantee, accessories bits and bobs and generally try and rip you off and if you refuse those "extras" will then quote you that they are indeed out of stock and it will take six months to get them back in etc etc etc etc.... bwayphoto.com is a prime example of what Im talking about.

Does anyone have experience dealing with tristatecamera.com?

The MP is cooler. I want a chrome one, with matching 50 Lux, that I can sling over my shoulder in a cognac coloured Luigi half case while I sip cocktails on patio in the Med with a super-model, named Stella, who likes me for my camera. Yes, the MP is sexy. It really is. But that adds nothing to it’s ability to take pictures; nor mine.

The MP is no better at taking pictures than an M6 TTL. In fact I’d argue that the TTL is a more functional tool, largely because of the size and placement of the shutter-speed dial. And it’s cheaper, so you can save at least $1000 which you can spend on glass and film.

To those who suggest there is a functional difference in robustness between the models: Are you really trying to convince me that the MP is relevantly more robust than the M6? Really? Ok, maybe there are National Geographic photographers who have dropped their 6’s and bent the rewind crank. I suppose the knob is in fact a little more robust- but you know what gives even more security and reliability than an MP with a rewind knob? TWO 6’s, which can be had for the price of one MP, with cranks. So is this a game we’re really going to play?

Well.. I agree also. But two cameras is just one camera to many for me for what I need. And yes I agree about that shutter dial, its imminantly more useable from the getgo. I agree that between both machines they are both going to create the same image using the same glass. But then again my CV Bessa R3a would also give me the same image with the same glass, but it ****s its pants when Im standing in an alley way with a wind chill factor of blue fingers. I also wouldnt like to have missed that shot I took through a doorway in Louisina of a guy playing sax like a god because I couldnt see the patch becuase of back-lighting... and i certainly dont want to accidentally swing that camera into a concrete strut in a confined carpark and cripple it because that blasted 45d rewinder is knackered....

Looks like Tristate should be avoided. However, check out our site sponsors. Popflash.com has a used MP for $2300, and they're VERY reliable. I realize the pictures show a silver camera, but the ad says its black. If you call up Tony Rose (the owner) I'm sure you'll get a straight answer. There are two MP's listed, a silver and a black one, both for the same price. I think the pictures just got mixed up.

Also check out PhotoVillage. They have some "demo" units (usually means new) for good prices.

buy from B&G, Freestyle, Samys, Glazers, or KEH. I would not trust any major retailers.

MP all the way. If I had infinite money to buy a 35mm camera, a custom MP would be my ticket.
 
irq506 - It seems to me that you might be overthinking this. If you have the money, get the MP - no question, and maybe even go for an a la carte model. The M6 is a fine camera, too. If money is a concern then I suggest you try to find a place where you can carefully examine both the M6 and MP and decide if it's worth saving up for the MP (it probably is). Check out popflash, I think they have a used chrome MP for a reasonable price in very good condition. Of course if you want black, then it might be more expensive (I prefer chrome).

Anolhter point I might add that truly matters, is that the MP uses solid state electronics for the metering system...the M6 and ttl models still used a partial analog electronics...

The MP shares the same bullet proof electronics as the M7....

This is an important point as well.. Leica did truly make the M the best it could be with the MP. They took it as far as it could go...

Oh yes, and NO BATTERIES...(as compared to M7) this is of paramount importance.

Demian what is the issue with batteries? I've used electronic cameras for 25 years and never had a problem in the field. It is a fairly simple matter to always have replacement batteries in the bag... 😕
 
If the electronics go wild on the field due to humidity or temperature, then a mechanical camera is better because you still get the shot.
 
im using my bessa r2a at the moment, but after all these threads reading about MP, i really want to get a chrome MP for myself as well.
now comes to the decision, should i go and sell my digi gears which i rarely use now (ef 70-200Lis and ef24-70L) to get the MP or should i just keep these two lens and carry on using my r2a ?

btw, is there anybody actually sold their digi gears to get the leica M?

Yes, I sold my 20D and all my EOS lenses in May 2005 and never looked back.

Do you have any scientific proof that this is an accurate statement? (No fair quoting from Leica sales literature.) I'm sure a black lacquered brass camera feels nice in your hands, but does that translate to increased reliability?
 
you're not going to get proof, only assurances. i'd be more afraid of the film transport jamming, if i were you. chips of film, hitting the end of a roll before a full advance, etc.
