after owning and using an M6, M3 DS, CV 35 1.4 and ZM50 2 I would say it depends on your favorite focal length.

if you are a 35mm shooter then the M6
if you are a 50mm shooter then the M3

i thought I would have a hard time loading film on the M3 but I actually like it and even maybe slightly prefer it more than the M6

i sold my M3DS to buy a M6TTL.

I've got an M3DS and an M6TTL, and love them both for different reasons. The M3 viewfinder with a 50mm is just superb. And since I had Don Goldberg do the rangefinder "fix" to my M6TTL, and mask off the 28mm, 75mm and 135mm frame lines, I can focus with it as well as I could with my old M2, and that light meter is really handy to have in certain situations.

U\I use the two cameras together on projects, with a 50 cron mounted on the M3DS and either a 35 cron or 90 cron mounted on the M6TTL. Great combo.

After all the M3 talk around here I would like to try one but I shoot with 35mm lenses a lot of the time so M3 might not be a good choice for me. I loved my M6. - Jim

I made the above comment in June of 2012 and now in October 2013, I have a M3 and I love it's feel of it and the viewfinder is spectacular. I also shoot with 35mm lenses and don't like changing lenses while I am out shooting so, I purchased an M2. What a great combination of cameras. I carry both cameras with a 50 on the M3 and a 35 on the M2. I prefer a hand held meter so this works great for me. If you really need a meter in the camera then hang onto at least one M6's. - jim

Shooting 50mm with an M3 is special and unique.
M6 is a very complete camera and one of the best at the time. It could be argued that it is now an outdated camera.
Shooting film RF today, it seem obvious to me why trading a few of the M6 features for the M3 handling and focusing experience.

I voted M6 because I have 2 M6 bodies. I owned a M3 and traded it after some months. Very nice camera, but I prefer the 0,72 viewfinder. Now, a M2 or M4 cross my mind from time to time.

So I have a M6 and recently a friend handed me his M2(only M i have held before mine which I bought over a phone)…. wow butter film advance with .72 for my 35 Cron and beautiful & bright view finder which leads to a silly question ad slightly off topic…. does a M7 or MP feel at all like a M2 or M3 but has the meter? Is there such a combination of all of the greatnesses in one body? M5? assuming it doesn't exist if Leica built it I would buy it!…. thanks for appeasing my question…..

I dont really get the OP's post. But in a this over that and why type question, Personally, I like to shoot 50, I like to shoot "boulevard" photography. (aka street) and I just dig the 50, and the 40mm... and there is no better camera for the 50 than the m3. Also, I can tell you from experience, the m3 is more fun to hold, I can just sit on my couch and hold an m3, marvel at how beautiful and heavy and brass and mechanical it is, m6 not so much. While I love my m6 TTL and its mint, I dont marvel at it the way i do M3/M2's .... not even m4's have "it"

Anyway, thats why i would pick the M3... double stroke. 900,xxx serial is best. IMHO. SS is good too though. And if your a 35 guy, get the M2, still better than the M6 to me.

Just my opinions. Nothing more, nothing less.

I love both the M3 and the M6. It really comes down to the frame lines and whether you think that you need a meter or not. If the 50 is your main lens, and you don't need a meter, then you can't beat the M3. If not, go with the M6. If you can afford both, that would be my choice. I have the M2, M3, and M6 and don't think that I'd like to have to choose.

for 50 mm and longer, there isn't any better.
for 35 mm use the full frame or the goggled lenses.
for 28 mm, the 90 mm sits nicely on the 1/3 of the frame.
M3 has the best viewfinder (but they shouldn't have put rounded corners on the 50 mm frame).
