M8 Firmware 1.10 Update

It is very fast - IF you switch of AF - that is the holdup.I've never had any electronic problems with mine. My only problem was that is was not quite up to falling off a table onto a concrete floor -that was rather costly.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but was there ever any concrete date for the update announced by Leica? Was it on their web site?

Also- has anyone noticed that the apology letter from Leica about the problems with the M8 seems to be gone from the web site? Either that or it's moved and I can't find it.

No there was not - February has been mentioned, but no fixed date. I am confident that it won't be long before the 1.91 version is released and the cyan-fixing 1.10 a bit later.

I have printed lit from Leica (and so does everyone who purchased an M8 after the first production run) that says firmware v. 1.10 or later would be available by early December. What do you software guys make of this? Also this was on there website but I'm not certain if it still is but no matter- if they put into print for early Dec. and then it vanishes to the point of denial at around the same time as the Jenoptik fallout seems more then just "working the bugs out"

See - and it is still February... No Cyan vignetting though. 1.10 will come, don't worry.

As was told me by one of the beta-testers: all known bugs. Including the Scotty-beam-me-up and faint vertical band. LCD readout changes too and much more.

They can take their time with the cyan vignetting (he said, selfishly, having mostly non-Leica wide angles that probably will be better served by hand-correction), but if people report no more lockups and weird happenings with 1.091, I'll probably hit the Buy button next time B&H has some in stock. That said, after yesterday's stockmarket crash some of my excitement to spend $4800 on a camera has diminished :( One thing I wonder is, if all the DOA's were firmware-related why was Leica telling people to send them back in for repair rather than just to wait a week for the new firmware...or were those cams so DOA they wouldn't turn on far enough to load new 'ware?

I am sure that mapping all cyan vignetting patterns is a laborious work that will take some time. I might add that the number of dead cameras seemed to be falling steadily over the last month - most posts were rehashes of previous occurrences. As for stockmarket crashes - it may rekindle the Leica-investment argument ;) I cannot post: "for investing stocks are more appropriate"any more :p

Hey what gives? I checked the link on the German Leica site and it no longer has the 1.091, it's back to 1.09!! Kind of like those disappearing pages from Canon's Japanese site that "sneak preview" new models? Hope it was indeed a finished product, for those who quickly updated their cameras with it

If mapping cyan vignetting patterns is laborious work why did Leica announce that 1.10 would be out in February?

They made a clear announcement in December that using <35mm lenses would be optimised by 1.10 in February.

I updated one, it works fine, better colour balance in tungsten, less noise at 1250,preview shows exposure and ISO in a black instead of grey bar.
The speculation is that it was posted and retracted because the bumpf around it was not yet translated out of German.
There seems to be a glitch in the scrolling through the menu, which was already reported by the beta-testers, though I did not see it yet.

Perhaps 1.091 is actually the beta version of 1.10, Leica knew they could count on their corps of volunteer beta-testers to jump on it and have it fleshed out meanwhile their paid techs can devote themselves to the cyan issue :D Perhaps they pulled it once a certain number of downloads had occured, so if it fries cameras they won't have a boatload of them coming back :D If that's their strategy I'm genuinely impressed with their cleverness :D

I have the file if anyone wants it.

Also, I have been shooting with a 15 and the corners still show a lot of cyan.

In that case they miscalculated in Internet speed of distribution; I pulled my version from Guy Manusco's download site, where it is still available ;)

Ben Z,
I am sure that the Cyan mapping is taking longer then expected with out Jenoptik on the team. That we placed pressure on Leica for a fix to the more fundamental issues like WB and camera freezes meant a two stage rollout rather then a six month wait for 1.10. This seems to me to be a smarter option if 1.10 is not ready for prime time and much better then waiting for the firmware roll out to end all firmware roll outs. If this solves the problem are you going to join the mostly ecstatic ranks of M8 photogs?

ST

PS. Cyan mapping is an easy post process fix.
