I have an opportunity to pick up an M9 that is described as being in 'stellar' condition and having approx a 50K clicks (actuation) count.

Looking for opinions/advice. The ask price is 5100.00 even.

Is that a fair price?

Thanks guys/gals...

Yes I'd think the same, 50,000 isn't bad, but it is a lot for the age if it is also in 'stellar' condition. Ask the seller for the Unique Image ID (easily found in the EXIF file) for the last photo taken, then put that figure into a hexadecimal converter to find the actual number of images made. If they 'don't know' or 'can't find it' think twice.

There haven't been many used M9s out there. Perhaps we are just seeing the start of the used market. Think of the rest of us when you set the precedent.

Yes... I've seen the demos, and they seem to be in the 5800.00 to 6200.00 range if I'm not mistaken.

Yes the warranty is a must... that is my next question to the seller.

I have to ask how it was used... maybe a pro's studio. That would explain the high pic count and great condition.

Okay... here is the last remittance from my seller. As it turns out it's not 50K shots on the camera but actually 22406. So it's actually half as bad.

So, my question to the RFF community is the same. At 5100.00 is this a good deal? He still hasn't mentioned the warranty also :(

The eMail reads as follows:

Okay, Joe. Did the shutter release info. Here's a great utility for that by the way. http://www.soens.de/swpage/swpage/m9infoe.html
Turns out I grossly overestimated the number of shutter releases. It only has 22406. Which is a very cool thing, obviously. As far as explaining why 50K clicks on an M9, not my issue I guess at this point but I've had the camera since last May and I would have hoped to have shot the hell out of it. But I have an M7, D700, D3, LX3, and I shoot them all. I may force myself to sit down and take pictures of this camera because my term (stellar) to describe the condition could mean anything and the camera is not brand new and although it looks brand new I'm sure under close inspection there's some signs of wear somewhere. Not looking to surprise anyone or misrepresent anything. But I would suggest that if you're super-concerned about cosmetic wear and tear, not that mine shows anything obvious, but if that's who you are you should by a brand new camera. Anyway. I'll try to document everything photographically and get those shots to you.

thanks

John

On the question of shutter clicks, if you use your image management software to do the guessing, one could end up guessing about twice as high as the actual IF you save images simultaneously in both JPEG and RAW, as your software will count each version as a new image. How about that warranty?

Why is everyone expecting a warranty? Individual sellers don't usually offer any warranty on used photo gear, unless they are a camera store or dealer, in which case they may offer one.
