Indeed. This thread started off with people stating opinion as fact, and has turned into something far more useful. Thank you Jono, and the rest who have taken their time to share their experiences and images from working with this new camera. So much more enlightening than the simple-minded dismissal (or praise) that typically litters photography discussion threads, and one of the reasons I keep coming back to RFF.

Jono's a stellar photographer, and just because it isn't in your style doesn't make it mediocre. Plus, he's been at it far longer than you or I, and we stand to learn a lot from his wisdom and measured approach and thinking...

Please. Noooo. But as I said in the write up, I'm not impartial. My job is to find things wrong and tell Leica about it. To find things right and tell you about it!
Hopefully it's an honest position, as long as its stated clearly.
Ashwin. Thanks for the support.

My concerns were not about you and your photography (which is usually a class of it`s own !) but about Ashwin`s "support" ...

Thanks for that and I would add that I feel that Jono has done an excellent job 'test driving' this unknown camera and as he said new workflow. Yes the shots on the leica site may have more punch but I don't think they really show the potential of the camera and actually look very much like the results you would get from using a standard M9 and some quite extreme modifications in SF pro. from what I am seeing this camera gives and incredible almost (and I am not a techie) panchromatic range of greys which is what I would have thought you need as a good starting point for further work. On the other hand I am not sure even apart from price if this is a camera for me. Though I shoot mostly B&W I love the power that I have to work on the conversions from colour in my digital workflow and wonder if this might be a limiting factor. I look forward to being able to get hold of some DNGs to work on.Hi there
You can't really use the filters or the film types, but the localised controls work really well, and with the excellent dynamic range of the camera you can really do a lot.
I suppose that the criticism of Leica for including it with the camera is based on a preconception that it's only designed for conversion from colour. Actually (IMHO of course) it's simply the best editor for monochrome images.

When Jono's image became available for download on the Leica site I thought it was presented this way for the purpose of letting others play around with it in SEP, which is what I did and got some really stunning results from the JPEG file . I appreciate the fact that he allowed the image to be presented this way and goes along way to showing that Leica made a great choice having him test the camera . Sobol's images had his distinct look , you either like his style or not .... but I could see where he started from to get that final look based on Jono's image .
George,
As far as Ashwin being a "shill" you could not be further from the truth ... From what I know of him he is talented and enthusiastic photographer who goes out of his way to help out others ...sounds to me he is just got a fellow colleagues back ,nothing wrong with that . IMHO

HI There
Well - Ashwin as a friend from way back when, and I guess he read the start of the thread and started posting before he got to the end. Sometimes it's tougher to be restrained when people are saying things about a friend!
I can promise that he's no kind of a shill - very much his own man - and he is a fantastic photographer as well (check it out).

HI David
thanks for the kind words - I think this is the real conundrum - I'm hoping to be able to post a couple of DNG files soon - but it won't help you with your decision I'm afraid!

Ashwin sure sounds like a shill in this thread. Why not let your work with the camera stand on its own?
Great. Now we're calling people we don't know and who we disagree with "shills." A simple google search would show you that Ashwin is an enthusiast who frequently contributes to another, well known site.

Jono, thanks for posting the photographs on your blog and enjoyed your calm and thoughtful responses throughout the thread.
Also the photo that you posted above, Wide angle Tri-elmar 320 M Monochrom ISO 18mm Walberswick Suffolk, is fantastic, just love it.
Tough thread to read through and did not want to comment on day one, to be honest I had my own expectations on what I wanted to see and a lower price point for a Black & White only camera. The price of the 50/2 Summicron pretty much floored me as well. Five days later and having taking some time to let things settle down and reading the reviews from several sites/blogs, I can honestly say that I find the camera interesting and would love to have one at some point in time.
. . . . . for the time being need to practice time and patience.
Thanks Dave for finding the blog and starting the thread.

This is the weirdest thread, seemingly derailed by one snide remark.
I was confused by the reference to "mediocre" images, which I assumed referred to the DPReview test shots. Those seemed to be mediocre on purpose, I felt to make the camera look bad.
Now I see the reference was to the shots by Jono from China. These may look "bare" (I assume not much processing), but are wonderful images, especially considering they were made mainly to try out the camera. They made me at least take more of an interest in this very high-priced instrument.
I don't understand the nasty tone toward someone with obvious talent and skill, who is trying to share their experience.

Thank you, Dan. When the products were announced (and so many people were flocking to RFF on May 10th), I was referred to Jono's work and I was rather impressed to say the least. It was a good time to shed some light on this marvelous new camera coming to us via Leica. There will be many reviews in the near future.
The variety of images he shot shows different results of images and Jono has done a wonderful job explaining the whole thing. The puzzling thing is to make a whole thread sour by criticizing the photographer's presentation and not one reference to his written article. Just criticism about the images.
Well, that is the internet, I suppose, quite different in the real world where if the photographer and the critical reviewer were sitting at a table discussing the photos over a beer, I suspect the two would getting along with the subject of the matter, the new camera itself and not making this a curate's egg!

George, I'm not a shill...first time I was ever accused of that. I've contributed widely on many forums, and I have known Jono and his work for many years. He's a gentleman and talent. I found about this thread, as it was referenced at GetDPI, where I tend to share more frequently. I have been an admirer of Jono's work and the demeanor by which he carries himself online. He's become a friend off the forums through discussion of gear and photos. So yes, I felt the need to chime in, as he is a friend. This doesn't make me a shill. I am not trying to get anything out of it, other than to back up a friend and member of several shared photographic communities? Am I not allowed that, as much as prior posters have been allowed to criticize the work that we have seen now. Opinions are totally fine, as is criticism, but I have long stated that I'd prefer that we share Constructive Criticism, rather than vitreol, and the comments that I read seemed mean and caustic...I responded to that....If you wish to consider me a shill, all the power to you, but I would like you to trust that I have the best of intentions to simply come to the defense of an individual (Jono) who's work I admire and who's been nothing but helpful to many of us as we began our Photographic Rangefinder journeys...

Much appreciated. Yup, I don't get to contribute much here, but have been active on DPR, GetDPI, and Huff's site. I consider many people, including the individual who's comments bothered me, to be individuals who's photos I admire. Jono has helped me with my own photography though constructive feedback, and yes, he has become a friend. I am sorry only to have spoken out of turn, given that the thread had moved on...but I'd happily come to Jono's defense (not a shill, though LOL)

Looks like there are very few here who remember and revered Panatomic X, Verichrome Pan and Plus X, especially Panatomic X.
I can't believe the subtle range of tonality from the 9M. If I had the money I would buy it in second. Finally, a digital camera worth having to make art images!
For you whipper snappers lost in the world of grainy high contrast, stick with your Tri-X, but for those of us who who learned photography shooting black and white in large format, this is a revelation!
Panatomic images at ISO 3200+! My god I'm old! Wow!
