M9 Monochrom in China

Looks like there are very few here who remember and revered Panatomic X, Verichrome Pan and Plus X, especially Panatomic X.

I can't believe the subtle range of tonality from the 9M. If I had the money I would buy it in second. Finally, a digital camera worth having to make art images!

For you whipper snappers lost in the world of grainy high contrast, stick with your Tri-X, but for those of us who who learned photography shooting black and white in large format, this is a revelation!

Panatomic images at ISO 3200+! My god I'm old! Wow!
is there a 'like' button around here - I don't have anything to contribute to this post Dan except to say that I really LIKE it!

I also 'Like' Aswin and Dave's posts - let peace reign!

all the best

No "like" buttons here but there is still the old fashioned way for those who have manners to just say "Thank You"!;)

Thank you, Jono.

The gentleman who took the samples at Leica's request chose to discuss them here and in so doing opened himself to criticism. I personally believe that to have been an ill-considered move on his part, others may disagree.

Hi George
just a couple of points
1. I didn't take the samples at Leica's request - I tested the camera for them, I've never had an artistic discussion with them, and they've never endorsed my images. . . . I'm a free agent, not a flag waggler.

2. I didn't chose to discuss them here - the discussion was started quite without me - I did chose to chip in whilst I was being seriously criticised (I don't think it was a mistake, as the thread has changed from an exercise in vitriol into a useful discussion).

I'm just this guy you know! I'm reasonably competent at various things (including taking photographs) and I assume Leica find the combination of competences useful - I actually think that this camera is a brave and wonderful adventure . . . but it isn't really my place to say so.

But - no - I might be flag waving, but the samples are all mine, and I didn't chose to discuss them here.

On the other hand - I'm quite capable of taking the flack - putting images up on the internet opens one up to criticism. I hope you can't find any point when I've complained about that.

all the best

Dan: Exactly! Well said! :D Well, except for the large format stuff. I did shoot a lot of 35mm Tri-X, but when I'm scanning the old negs from the 70's, I wish, I 'd shot it all in Plus X.

Cheers, Matt

Thank you, Dan. When the products were announced (and so many people were flocking to RFF on May 10th), I was referred to Jono's work and I was rather impressed to say the least. It was a good time to shed some light on this marvelous new camera coming to us via Leica. There will be many reviews in the near future.:)

The variety of images he shot shows different results of images and Jono has done a wonderful job explaining the whole thing. The puzzling thing is to make a whole thread sour by criticizing the photographer's presentation and not one reference to his written article. Just criticism about the images.

Well, that is the internet, I suppose, quite different in the real world where if the photographer and the critical reviewer were sitting at a table discussing the photos over a beer, I suspect the two would getting along with the subject of the matter, the new camera itself and not making this a curate's egg!

Your welcome Dave!

Jono is a contributor over at GetDPI which I frequent as well and I am familiar with his work and personal style when he posts information and his responses in threads. You are quite right about when people face each other across the table the conversation is conducted much differently then on internet threads.

Once a month, except for December the SLUG's (Seattle Leica Users Group) gather for discussion and good cheer. There is usually a theme posted by the host and people bring both print and electronic copies of their work. Everyone has an opportunity to stand up, show their work, and have a critique. A lot of honesty in the discussions but with good intentions as individuals express their opinions. I look forward to it and it is a lot of fun. Members of the group often meet during the month for photography walks.

The one thing about the group is that the discussion is photography and not inclusive to just Leica products. The discussion includes many brands of cameras, lenses, film, processing labs, ect. Besides showing my work using Leica both film and digital, I have shared work taken with my Rolleiflex and Mamiya 7II. Others have shared work produced on Hasselblad, Sony, Ricoh, Cannon, Nikon, and others. I do not believe there is one member who has attended that does not have more then one type of camera.

Certainly meeting with a group of people and having a discussion can be much different then the internet.

I appreciate RFF and the contributions by its members, I have picked up a lot of useful information along the way in many of the threads.

My other experience in life which I try to practice is patience and there is often times when there is no reason in the world I need or should express my opinion on something.

Hope all is well with you.
