Over the years I've come to settle on the 40mm as a the sole purpose lens for most of my 35mm work. I never seemed to warm up to 50, too tight. When I first got my 40 Summicron-C, I really wanted a 50 and a little later got to try a 50/2 and though as decent as the 40, I just found it too tight and wanted to get a 35 to mate with it. I did and then found the 35 a might too wide to use as a sole lens so it was down to the 40 or 2 lenses. Did not make sense to me. Come to thiink of it, I think the only 50mm lens I have is the Bronica ETRS that with the 35mm back is the same as the angle of a 50 on a 35mm camera obviously. One the Bronica, I use the 40mm far more than the 50mm with the back. I might for a 2nd lens opt for for something in the 21-28 range.
