that's wide open on the 80 f/4 too, so any front/back focus you see is definitely from me.

Bobfrance, did you dodge/burn these shots a fair bit? They don't look strait off the scanner to me. Super nice though!

too much accutance is easy to handle. simply skip adding USM or deconvolution sharpening off your scanner. if you rely on a lab, ask them not to sharpen.

The Mamiya 7 is an admirable camera, but if candid, "situational" shooting is the goal, no MF rangefinder can match the Fujica 670 or 690 with the 100/3.5 AE lens.
Automatic meter shooting must be the ultimate.

Doesn't the Mamiya 7 have an AE mode?

Portraits taken with Mamiya 6. Optical prints were scanned on crappy flatbed scanner which greatly diluted resolution and tonality. However, the somewhat hazy result does give the portraits a bit of a nostalgic mood.

i love the Mamiya 7 for portraits. Here's one off the only film I've ever had the chance to run through one.

It's not great for beauty shots as you can't really get close enough because of the limited close up focusing (or lack of) but these kinds of shots are still beautiful, but I wouldn't use it as a regular portrait camera.

Well I just made it to this MF rangefinder section for the first time and found this thread. It's an older thread, but in case the person that posted was still interested, I think my Mamiya 6 does a fine job with portraits. Here are 3 examples in different lighting conditions, straight scans no processing. They are very lo res for posting to the web.

If you want closer portraits, the negs/slides can easily be cropped with very little effect on their sharpness or tonality. Any such loss is very minor versus the loss of sharpness and tonality from scanning the negatives/slides on your typical flatbed scanner.

All lenses available for this system (6/7) have the same minimum focus distance of 1 meter. In my experience, this is actually pretty close, try pointing your camera even 2 feet in front of a strangers face.
If I'm after a close up ill either crop, or switch to 150.
I find the 50 and 65mm lenses for the 7 Are most useful. As the angle of view is more appropriate for the minimum focus distance when shooting portraits out and about.
Like many have posted, this particular system is not aimed towards close focus or even being a quick street shooter. I prefer my M3 for focus accuracy, but **** guys I think Mamiya had their work cut out for them when they promised a new compact replacement for the press cameras. My personal opinion is that we are lucky to have such a nice camera, with gorgeous Mamiya optics, in the first place. Such a camera if left on the drafting table another year or two would have been swept under by the digital rush.
Ide love to see more images from everyone! Excellent captures!
Envious, and in need of an appropriate scanner!
