Mamiya 7ii dove off a cliff

If it wouldn't impact your premium, I'd get a new setup and pay the deductible. $440 repair on a lens that you will wonder about failing at some point doesn't seem worth it.

Ouch.

+1 on the buy a new setup and pay the deductable, as long as they will spring for a new setup.

KEH has a used 65 and 7ii kit for what MAC wants to sell you a new body for.

Before the camera decided to test if gravity still sucks, how old/used was it?

I am not sure of the age of the camera. The 7ii is a current model, though. My claims adjuster says he just needs a $ figure from Mamiya for what it would cost to replace the lens/body. I will have to get them to do that instead of a repair order for the lens. Then my insurance will issue me a check for that, minus my $1000 deductible. I am free to spend the insurance check on any camera I choose: new 7ii set up, used 645, etc.

If I spend more than the insurance gives me, they will just give me more. If I find a camera for less than they give me, I get to pocket the cash. I have to spend $1000 of my onw money no matter what camera I decide to get. I can say "forget insurance, forget repair, I will buy a camera that costs less than $1000 and sell the lens as-is on ebay."

It seems my decision rests on "is the Mamiya 7ii what I want?" Is the 65mm the lens I want? Maybe a Mamiya 6 and 2 lenses is what I want. This damaged camera is my 2nd go-around with the 7ii. I had one a few years ago with a 50/80/150 lens combo and sold it to get into Hasselblad. Then I sold the Hassy to get this Mamiya.... Maybe I just sell off my MF film and not replace anything....

I'd ask Mamiya what it would cost from them for a new 7ii and you know to add $400 for the lens. If it's MAC ask them to not cut you any deals (keeping the body for parts, etc.).

Which way to go, you have lots of thinking to do. Good think you only have one wife. Otherwise you might have a multiple of 8X different options.

You know the body might be a good blender clip on U-Tube!

Sorry, gallows humor and all......

Get a reasonable amount from the insurance and then see where you want/can/need to go.

So my insurance will pay based on the cost of a new body from mamiya and the cost of the lens repair. That comes to $2854. Minus my deductible, they are sneding me a check for $1854. I can buy what ever I want with that. If I replace the 7ii, and provide receipts, then they will issue me another $265. I am thinking a used 7 ro 7ii, the 65 repaired and a UGLY 43mm from keh... Or the Fuji GSW680 they have for a lot less money. Or something for my Leica or Nikon dslr and a less expenxive 120 camera.

Jay, glad you will receive some money for all that trouble.

If I were you I would not get another Mamiya 7 or 6. Sell the repaired 65mm for what it is, and save the money until you put this all behind, then you'll make better decisions.

As far as camera recommendation, I know it's not 6x7, but the Fuji GA645i (65mm focal length) or GA645wi (45mm) can be had for a third of that money. And it's a darn good camera for going near cliffs next time (I meant hiking).

A deal came up on my craigslist tonight and I went for it. It is a nearly new 7ii with an 80. I then found a 50 on ebay for a price I was OK with. The camera is a newer version and I can't say I like the crinkle/matte finish as much as the glossy..... If ever anyone of you and I meet and you want to trade your glossy 7ii for a matte 7ii, then I will oblige.
The funny thing is, I had a 7ii with a 50/80/150 a few years ago and sold it. That was before all these crazy prices! I will skip the 150 this time around.

Jay,

Glad you found a replacement. I haven't had my M7ii for long, but absolutely love it every time I use it...and then I see the results.

I'm just now downloading and viewing 16 rolls of Portra 400 (220 format) taken on a recent trip to Europe, processed and scanned by Precision. The quality is amazing (shots and the scans). Even the JPEG scans, without any post-processing, look better than most of the shots I got from my 5D Mark II this past weekend in Queenstown! Think I'm going to have to suck it up and get the 43mm!

Happy shooting.

Jeff

Lucky you, i dropped my H4D-60 out of hurry and i paid about $2700 to get it back from repair, if that didn't happen then i will buy 2 large format lenses at least.
