Wondering if anyone has a fix for this. I was out shooting with my Mamiya Super 23 today, and the film counter on the Mamiya Press 6x7 back suddenly reset itself in the middle of the roll. I've tried different rolls of film and the counter keeps resetting itself to "S".

This presents two problems:

1) I no longer know what number frame I'm on.

2) The 6x7 back doesn't lock to let me know that it's ready for the next frame, leaving me to possibly expose over the other frame.

Does anyone have any possible solutions?

Many thanks in advance.

Which back do you have? Some are simple roll backs and some are advance lever back. I did have a problem with my lever action back. It was a simple fix, but hard to explain. There was a tiny tag on the opening back that pushes a button on the fixed back. If that tag is bent down from use, it will not push the button in all the way. I will go over it in more detail if you think this is the problem.

I haven't been in any of mine in a while. I think there is a ratcheted wheel that keeps the frame counter where it is supposed to be, and the film sensor working as it should. If as charjohncarter said, that tab isn't working right, it could be the problem. Otherwise the film transport or ratchet might need looking at.

If his nor my suggestions seem to be it, I will try to find time to look at one of my backs to see what else might cause the problem (but be patient please).
