March Challenge: Photo and no equipment buying

Grandma's Home Remedy for GAS

Put all your camera equipment in one cardboard box.
Write today's date on the outside.
Remove items as you need to use them (not "think you're going to use them", but "need to"); once removed, do not put back in the box
One year from now, go back to the box -- anything still there, sell.
Repeat.

🙂

I think we all have sudden impulses when we see a great deal somewhere, but once in a while it is good to stay away from the buying machine (your pc) and go out and take photos. I am "in" for sure. I have done my deeds and should be able to control any new impulses.

I am proposing to make (informally) March the month in which we try to take more excellent photos and try not to add more equipment on our buying list.
Sounds like a good plan. I just completed the lens set I want for my Bessa; a J12 and a Helios-103 are being shipped for my Kiev; and the only possible change I see for my Nikon SLR kit would involve trading some equipment I already have for an F100 body ... so I'd actually reducing my equipment if that goes through.

Considering that March 1 is Ash Wednesday for us Catholics, refraining from gear acquisition might be a good Lenten abstinence. But like my usual such resolutions for Lent, it will likely fall by the wayside!

It is hard to refrain from getting medium format SLR gear, though, because there are some excellent deals to be had. I feel pretty well set on rangefinder stuff, though (unless I see a really good deal on an M2).

Joe,
Is my proposal so "terribly bad" ? Come one. It's just one month. Imagine the beauty of April when we can go back and buy stuff! It will be even more enjoyful. It's like going ona diet and being deprived of chocolate cake with cream for a month, and then you are "allowed" to indulge in artery filling and blood vessel clogging chocolate lust again!

I think the lull, or gear binge you see is due to it being winter up here in the north. Even though in NE we have had a mild winter us mammels are creatures of habbit. So, we are less adventursome and packed up till the spring.

Raid count me in !
I've had a three-month long acute case of GAS.
Really...that's what I got from dec05 'till now:
---cameras---
Bessa R3A
Bessa L
Bessa T
Konica Auto S2
Retinette IB
Horizont
Leica M2
Leica M6
---lenses---
VC 75/2.5
VC 40/1.4
VC 21/4.0
VC 15/4.5
Jupiter 8
Industar 61
....guess that's ENOUGH to call for some drastic remedy.. :bang:
...just gimme the time to get a nice 35mm for my lens lineup!

you know, this may drive prices back down as sellers panic watching their Leicas and Canons sit on eb8y without any bids...if we can do it for a few months, some of the members on here may be able to afford a new camera eventually as we bottom out the market.

We'll have to keep buying film though, in order to maintain demand 😀

yes raid, this plan is genius....mua ha ha ha ha ha!

ps. can you tell I've no real understanding of ecconomics? 😀

sell me some talent Taffer.

I get it from the corner store, just like Diafine it comes in both 1/4 and full gallon versions 😀

Oh uh, that would work against the march deGASsing, i guess, for you...

Actually i'm thinking of selling my contax. LOL.

Contax ? Where, when, how much ? 😀

See, Frank, OScar... the problem with the contax is, it's such a great joy to use it but the results are totally confusing. I had a wasted disappointing roll, then a very good one, then the last one is, again, so-so... (i mean it technically, of course). Dunno. Globally the results from the GSN, the hi-matic and the Canonet are better.
