March Challenge: Photo and no equipment buying

In fact, i am doing nowadays a spontaneous photo project that would be called "from my window, above the street"
But that's with a dumb little digital camera, that has some longer lens than my hi-matic or contax I have here.
I stay on the third floor, the window offers a view on a street which is very busy daytime and late in the afternoon gets empty.
Lots of funny things happen. Especially duting the night but that's more difficult to record with my current setup🙁
Here are some examples.
Yes it is a bit voyeuristic, but that's the point! I do take care that noone's recognizable, tho'.

My wish to stop buying more equipment has successfully resulted in a sudden trade of equipment with someone. This is great. No cash exchanged and done based on gentlemen agreement that we can decide to change our mind and return the items.

Joe, my Canon VI-L seems to be gone.

You need an infrared camera for using at night 🙂

Seriously, anything that makes one get to do and attempt something, is good.

And I really like the third picture, btw !

I am proposing to make (informally) March the month in which we try to take more excellent photos and try not to add more equipment on our buying list. It shouldn't be that hard a thing to do. Have we reached a point where buying more equipment is more fun than actually going out with what we have and taking good photographs? I hope not. Even if nobody will follow my recommendation for March, I will try to do it myself.

I'm in Raid -- unless I find a 75/1.5 Biotar in Contax mount (not likely) 🙂.
I'm bored/tired of buying gear...taking pictures is way more fun!!!

I traded the VI-L plus one LTM lens for a very clean Leica Standard camera. We gave each other until the end of March to reverse the trade if either one of us wants to. I'm not sure what I will do then.

Ok, we're getting to an agreement about not buying equipment.

Could we give the screw another half turn ?

What about thinking on a short and personal (and new) photo project, let's say around 5 pictures max. Shot, finished and uploaded to this thread (if possible) at the end of the month?

This way we could see how some of the ePay browsing time has been used. Or otherwise, just dedicate that time to work on the monthly RFF one.

Just throwing in ideas. If this thread comes to a good ending, I think we'll all be grateful to Raid when March is over 🙂

I like such photo projects. This thread will thrive and prosper (as they say) and we will be able to see many interesting photos here.

I am noting this fact. Compare photo.net to this website and you will find more emphasis on photography on PN than here. Maybe it is the nature of using older rangefinders that makes people enjoy collecting nice old stuff. In recent years, we have seen the rebirth of modern rangefinders that are affordable, so maybe there will be a slight change in habits.

I would love to, but I've already lost the challenge, it seems, as I've spotted today 6 or 8 russian cameras that interest me! I guess I'm going to have to self-finance my hobby...

Let's see...March in upstate NY: ugly weather, difficult light, no new gear. Sounds like a blast! I'm in.
Don't know if I'll have any photos worth sharing but it will be a challenge and that will be fun.
I do need( 🙄 ) to replace my camera bag but I'm not in any hurry so I'll have more time to search out what I wan-sorry-need.
And I guess if you can get enough people to do this then March will be the month to buy ebay stock at reduced $ ! 😀

Absolutely! I was not being sarcastic about the weather/light and challenge. I just will need to find some beautiful woman to hold the umbrella for me so the gear doesn't get wet 😀 That will be the real challenge.

A late poster, but I'm in Raid. Great idea... "A GASless MoShots March!"

I've actually been toying with the thought of putting the stops on until (1) a few upgrade/maintenance/repair projects are wrapped up and (2) I take the time to actually get out there and shoot some people/places/things I've been planning for a while now. So now the date is set to jump on it. Thanks for the encouragement Raid!

Yesterday, I saw a posting here in the website from someone who listed many nice items, and then I told myself, "this will never end". There will always be more good deals and I will keep on buying like many do, and then what? I decided to go Cold Turkey, as Joe says, and I wanted to share with you this simple idea. Maybe if we used what we have better we will actually have a btter diea what to buy next if we need anything and if want it. There will always be someone who actually needs the stuff, but if you already have dozens of lenses and many cameras, are you really using all your lenses and enjoying them? I guess, I am not trying to put down collectors, but encourage those of us who enjoy photography to do more of it.

We have quite a good number of people "promising" not to buy equipment during the month of March. It will be interesting to see what develops then. From now until the beginning of March there will be an increase in buys ...

I had to solve some doubts about enlarging lenses before grabbing my first one one. As a big % of this board is still sleeping the Feb 28th dream, I guess my BIN of five minutes ago is still inside the 'grace' period 😉
