I'm not so sure of that. I have heard some of the rougher schools are willing to hire people....though that is risky. Also, you may be able to be a substitute teacher somewhere.
My job became rather hostile a few years back, and I pursued a career change and applied to this program to become a certified teacher in NYC public schools. This would have been a pay cut and on top of a BA in fine Arts, a MA in TV broadcast journalism and screen writing, and a MFA in creative writing yet another masters in teaching. Anyways I was put on the short list but I was not called after taking a test and going for an interview.
Teaching in public schools is a real hard job, especially in the "underserved" neighborhoods that have the openings. In Harlem I met Brother Gregory who got out of the Marines and later taught in Philly.
Also know that I happen to work with some very disturbed, crazy, mentally ill people who happen to be very highly educated with terminal degrees, many with Ph.D's.
