Can you use a modern flash with the canonet ql 17? By modern, I don't mean a TTL flash. I mean the type of flash common in the 80's, with an automatic eye. You set the ASA on the flash, and it told you what f-stop to use. When you fired the camera, the flash would quit when the eye received enough light.

Since the canonet will sync up to 1/500, it would be really nice to be able to use this camera with a flash, both indoors and outdoors as a fill flash.

And, if you can't use this flash on the canonet, can you use one of the Minolta hi-matic?

I use a vivitar 285HV with a minolta himatic 7s. I would imagine that it would also work with a canonet. the 1/500 flash sync is great.

I've tried some pre-digital-era Nikon flashes (SB 25,26 and 27) in Auto mode on a Canon 1Ds mk II. The exposures were quite reasonable. So an auto-mode flash should work perfectly well with a Canonet. These Nikon flashes have to be told the ISO and aperture you are using and handle everything from there. These particular units are a bit oversized and unhandy for a Canonet though, they probably weigh as much as the camera.

Yes, almost any flash will work.

But if your canonet has any additional contacts on the hot shoe, be sure to cover those. My QL17 GIII has a contact for the canon dedicated flash for that camera, and automatically switches to flashmatic mode even with different flash mounted if there is a contact that touches the additional contact on the hot shoe.

I've used Canon 277T. A very good flashgun BTW. Quite compact and has automatic working apertures from f2 to f22 at ISO 25 to 400. Not just 2 working apertures like most cheap automatic flashguns.

I can assure you that both the Vivitar 2600 and the Sunpak 120 work just fine on the QL17, at least on the GIII model.

(A QL17 with a Sunpak 120! Talk about the tail wagging the dog!) 🙂
