Monochrom 246 and Leica SL in New Mexico

I agree. 18MP times 14 bit equals 252 MB files for the MM.

24MP times 12 bit equals 288 MB files on the M-246. The M-246 records more data.

Something to consider is the SL is 24 MP and 14 bit for 336 MB files, but then there is Bayer Filter Array factor.

This is just crunching the numbers... not usage and experience.

Again great work and the camera does not matter.

Thanks Joe - this abandoned church is located about 1/4 mile off a dirt road (walked) just outside Santa Rosa (so it's an 'only locals know about it' place). A lot of energy there, if that makes sense.
 
Cal, my gut is telling me to stick with the 246, and ultimately I think that's what I'm going to do. Handling the SL this past week has been a valuable experience, and I am thankful for the opportunity. In the end, I think having the option of both and OVF and EVF is a big plus, and even the more straightforward handling of the 246 works better for me (even if the SL may produce sharper photos). However, the trip is not over yet!

Only you know what is right for you, and I greatly appreciate you sharing your experience.

I am wondering about the SL for me. Know that I own a Noct-Nikkor and a 50 Lux-R "E60." Both have vague focus on my D3X. Your experience with the 0.95 Noctilux is compelling.

For me I still own my MM so a SL will be an addition. Somehow I have to come up with the cash.

It is an amazing scene! If I were you, I'd go back under different light/cloud situations as often as I could to get the best possible shot out of this scene.

BTW, the sharpness of the SL is incredible!
 
Vince, you do an amazing job of getting away from the ugly bits of NM (strip malls for example) to show the NM I hold in my mind.

If you don't mind my asking. How did you light "Leonard"? If that was available light -- masterful image. Truly.

Seems harder to access old buildings/ruins these days (across the west). So many are on private property, and as you know, that means you better have permission before stepping one foot on that private land. And NM is one of the higher per-capita gun owning states....just saying.

I am now convinced I need to go back to NM and visit some old friends and colleagues. This time with a couple Leicas. No SL for me though -- probably the M9 and M6, with an assortment of lenses. And maybe a 4x5 too?

I remember an unusual church on the east side of the Sacramento range, on the highway 70 (Ruidoso to Roswell), east of Fox Cave (disgusting desecration of a perfectly nice cave). Easy access on the north side of the Hwy I think its in Glencoe. An old church. Adobe construction. And situated in a sunken courtyard. Its on my life-list to return to this place, and do it justice this time. Perhaps you know this one Vince?

Ugh. Just found it on Google Earth. Not as quaint as it was 25 years ago. A little tourist-ed out now. Very bummed about this. It's called St. Anne's Chapel if you're interested. Not the unknown little church it used to be. Might still be worth a stop if I'm in the area, but I may have to remove it from the life-list now.

Thanks for your thoughts - Leonard was lit with his work light hanging off the underside of the vehicle on the left, and the outside light from the garage door coming in from the right. I'm a big fan of cross-lighting, so when I saw this opportunity I took the shot.

I make a point of not going to the bigger cities here (having said that, I'm sitting in a restaurant in Santa Fe, so go figure :) ). As of this trip I've been to all four corners of the state, and am discovering more and more of those small back roads that have the rich New Mexico culture in all its facets. If my wife and I did move here, we would definitely not consider ABQ or SF - we'd be looking at much smaller towns.

I don't trespass on private property, particularly out here. I've considered 'packing' something while I'm out here (as I seem to be going into more and more remote areas), but that might bring a whole other set of complications, so it may or may not be a good idea. Knock on wood, I've never had any issues.

Personally I wouldn't want to haul a 4x5 out here, unless I didn't want to venture too far from my car. My camera bag is heavy enough with the extra body and three lenses, plus my little Canon printer. Can't imagine what it would be like with a 4x5, tripod and film holders.

Twenty years ago when I lived in La Cueva in the Santa Fe National Forest my neighbor upon first meeting offered to lend me a gun. When I asked him if he thought I would need one he said, "I'm not saying there will be trouble, but if there is you gotta realize that there is only one Sheriff for the whole county and it might be a while, like a couple of hours before he can help you out."

With only about 2 million people in the whole state, one area code for the whole state (when I lived there) it is pretty easy to find yourself alone.

Also know that there are still shoot outs like in the old days. It in many ways is still the wild-wild west.

I also had a friend who ventured into the Santa Fe National forest with his pretty wife. My friend basically had to draw his gun to avoid having his wife gang raped by drunks. Also know my neighbor responded to counter the New York gun laws, "You are perfectly in the right to shoot someone on your property. Does not matter even if you shoot them in the back." I had told Jim that in New York even if someone breaks into your house and you kill them one has to worry about charges of manslaugter.
