My "first roll" with the M8

Yeah it's a fun lens, stinks with the crop factor, but the results look alot like a stopped down f2/50mm Sonnar......

I will use RAW once I get LR4. By showing my posted images again, I am assuming that your short statement was judgement that the images kinda stink. Right?

I guess it was just a tip. M8 JPG kinda stinks😉 Except for B&W.

You have to be patient. The jpg usage was a first start for me with this camera. I would not spend so much money for mediocre images. It will be a learning experience for me.

I think eventually you would like shooting with the m8 more and more over your film m since it would be alot more convenient for your type of shooting. I find myself not using my m6 at all since the arrival of the m9. M8/9 files are very nice below iso 400 compared to equivalent nikon/canon counter parts. Definitely try shooting raw and develop your own work flow and presets in lightroom.

Psh...jpegs from the m8 are actually fantastic if you understand exposure and white balance. That being said, I only shoot dng, because i convert to b&w using my own color sensitivity curves that jpeg shooting would not accommodate.

What you say is encourging, but I may use RAW, followed by using LR to convert to JPG.
I trust Brian's advice here.

Loved your photos with the rigid summicron the best, all of them are great.

When you have LR4 you may want to set the M8 to create a JPG Fine and a Raw file. You can then do comparisons of the two in your post processing.

I really enjoyed the M8.2 that I had for awhile but sold it to move up to the M9.

well...with raw+LR4, you'll be amazed at the amount of highlight recovery you can dig out of the m8's files...my only tip is...when in doubt, overexpose slightly because underexposing the m8 leads to funky noise, where overexposing in raw and recovering highlights is mighty tasty. besides...the m8's DNG files are actually a reasonable file size, so they don't take up much space and they actually write quicker to the cards than the jpegs.

This is good to know. I used to underexpose slides, and then switched to expose nebative film at its rating. Now I move to overexpose with the M8!

I have one Leica battery and three off brand batteries. I charged them, and the off brand batteries show three bars as fully charged in the M8. I will try to use only the original battery, and have the off brand onews as emergency back-up.

The batteries (1900 mAh) have a two year warranty, which means little if they explode inside the M8, but I think they are fine.

a good trick to use it set the camera to DNG and JPG fine, and then set the colour to B+W

The preview on the LCD will be B+W but when you download the shots, you get a B+W JPG and a colour RAW file.

Also with LR4 it has a really good noise reduction algorithm so you can use ISO 640 quite readily for indoor use and if you like the grainy film look ISO 1250 and 2500 are usable too if you get the exposure right , I find the noise in the images reminds me of film grain

Enjoy your M8, Raid. These are very nice pictures but if I'm allowed to be honest w/o being flamed, I don't see anything amazing about the rendering that's over and above much less expensive APS-C level gear like a Nikon or Canon DSLR with one of their modern primes. Your skills as a photographer makes these pics stand above the din, not that you shot these with a Leica.
