ok, I am not a salon shooter, I do not pound much of the pavement. I do - however - take my cameras out into the woods and fields all the time.

So, over time i have lost all sort of covers to lenses for all sort of cameras in those woods.
Most recently a nice metal cover for the GG-3 hood of the 90mm lens just was not there when I checked. Retracing my steps through the brush led me astray and I never recovered the metal cover.
So I got a generic 57 mm snap on cover, which incidentally always catches inside the bag so it usually comes off automatically when I pull out the camera with lens.
Then I tried a 55mm screw in cover just like the ones all modern SLR lenses come with. It has held, does hold, and I am happy to not use the lost nice city-slick metal Contax cover any longer. Good riddance.

What are your experiences with covers over the hoods? Contax surely had a design problem with them ...

And of course I do not use a hood on the 28mm lens; it is just too short to do anything ...

The CC1 hood is supposed to be ok for the 28mm with a filter in between?

The CC1 hood will also accept a generic 55mm cap

But you need a pot of acrylic blackboard paint, as the cap will lift the origional stiff PDQ.

Try placing a couple pieces of masking tape on the inner rim of your next cap.

Is there black masking tape, or have I read the post wrong? I dont mind having to blacken hoods or even chrome filters.

I've seen black masking tape before, but I was thinking of regular (tan-yellow?) masking tape. The small pieces of tape would be placed on the inside of the cap's edge, not on the hood, to give the cap a tighter fit.

Not doing well on this name thing, sorry.

The 55mm clip one caps stolen from Konica fit (too) perfectly, the plastic threads on the push in the spring loaded fastners strip off the matt black paint. So you need a paint job every so often.

Noel,

Hope this helps.

I have had lots of problems with the metal lens caps and hoods. The Chinese remakes do not fit well and do look cheap and the local dealer in Hungary wants to sell this same Chinese remake for the same price as the original Contax. I happen to have a couple of original hoods and metal caps through ebay and they fit beautifully and stay on firm.

I agree. I've had good luck with the metal hoods but... I have lost some caps. I now use a stick on tether. This stops accidental loss, although it isn't exactly an elegant solution.

The tether is useful if you palm the string in left hand as it (should) stops you taking photos of the cap.

Generic 55mm snap in to threads caps are faster handling than push on clones, cheap and available as well.
