Hi!
September 30, nazis tried to march the streets of Gothenburg. Thousands of people turned up and stopped them. Here are some of my photos from the demonstration. I couldn’t photograph the nazis because they broke the law at the very beginning of there marching so the police shut them down and surrounded them. Me and the anti nazis was also surrounded by the police so that there could not be a battle between anti nazis and nazis. My photos are all from the antifa point of view.

Also, behind the scenes.

Sorry but after all the photos and the video, I still do not know the key point if the police were trying to stop the Nazis from marching or stopping the local population who were interfering with the Nazis right to march. That critical difference may be obvious to Swedes who understand the Swedish concept of freedom of speech but I can only speculate at best.

I confess, I do not know much about Nordiska motståndsrörelsen (NMR) - the "Nazis" of this thread but am willing to believe that they are ugly. But are they any more ugly than the violent, masked antifas brutes who turn out in force to oppose not just these guys but anyone who is not further to the left than Marx, Lenin and Stalin? The only Nazi symbols I saw were in a socialist leaflet by the way.

When I see NMR members marching quietly and in an orderly way in videos of the demonstration on Youtube it is pretty clear to me which side actually caused the mayhem. Just like in USA. Just like in Australia. Just like in every country. None of which have have NMR by the way. But it does not stop antifas who are willing to beat up, pepper spray and sucker punch ordinary citizens as well in the name of their ideology. At least I do not see the "Nazis" doing that.

I certainly give no support to Nazis but boy does it "P" me off to see the fascist Left get a free pass by the media and authorities - every time. Every time.

Maybe this thread should be closed?
It seems to inflame emotions and anger in some RFF members when it should be about the images.

I'm with you Raid ... the images will become secondary very rapidly.

Unfortunately the images don't really tell the story. Not trying to be rude to the creator, they could be anything with the exeception of the one with the leaflet.

Peter M I'm in full agreement.

Dear Board,

Every picture tells a story don't it?

I guess they only become troublesome when they don't echo your version of the narrative, right?

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Not at all the case here. I don't find them troubling at all. Tim if you click the link at the bottom of this post and go to the 3rd through the 5th pages you'll see some images that tell a strong story and are troubling. The images in this thread are just pictures. If the person that shot these didn't tell you what they were about you'd have no idea.

No one is saying that Tim. These pictures tell no story.

Compare them to photos that were shot during the white nationalist march in Charlottesville that turned violent. In those photos it was clear who was march, as numerous photos showed people with Nazi flags and carrying signs with white nationalist slogans and symbols.

In these photos, there were more photos of the anti-Nazi activists than of Nazis, no photos of any Nazi symbolism aside from an anti-Nazi pamphlet that featured a swastika on the cover.

Going back to x-ray's original post and clicking the link there as he suggests (I can't reproduce the link here) will show you some photos that are exactly as he describes "strong story and are troubling". To some of us, this is what photography is all about.

Having shot a bit of similar stuff over the last year here in Berkeley, I'll add my $0.02.
You have a number of good shots here (posted in the thread), but you also have some repetitive stuff too. Try to focus on the strong pictures here and supplement on story with the others. For the repetitive stuff, sit down and figure out which ones best tell your story here. Like a few others have posted, use the more symbolism material to mark out the drama.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for giving us the benefit of your informed opinion on a photography thread.

Perhaps, in your campaign for furtherance of freedoms, you should ask the mods to ban photos of events related to politics. I'm sure that's very much in the tradition of rangefinder and reportage photography.

Such subtle advice is delivered with great force when given by a person who uses Erich Salomon as an avitar.
