need some collapsible advice

ok, my 50/1.9 canon lens arrived today.

cosmetically it's in very nice shape. the glass is very clean & clear.

but...it won't screw all the in on my 7 and it's hard to screw it in onto the p. (only tried one p so far)

the infinity lock has no spring to it and it does not lock.

it twists & turns easily and smoothly and stays in place but it does not 'click' into place. (should it?)

and when on the camera the focus binds a bit, but not when it is off camera.

it collapses completely when off the camera but not when on the camera.

so, this is my first collapsible lens and i'm working in the dark.

Canon lenses originally had a different thread than Leica, then it was changed to match. Could the 50/1.9 be so early as to have the older thread?

it goes on one p with less drama than the other p but does not go on the 7, only a bit of a turn or so.

Check this:http://www.canonrangefinder.com/ He shows four different 50/1.9's. Yours looks like a Type 2 from 1949. (This is starting to sound to Leica-cultish!).

It may be hitting the light baffles. The Canon 7 had some that matched the Canon 50mm F0.95 that are a bear. Don't know about the "P". And you may have an early lens with non-standard threads. That F1.9 was the first Canon normal. I think I will try the Canon 50mm F1.5 on the Canon 7 real quick.

It fit fine; came with a IIf.

My collapsible 50/3.5 Serenar scrapes the baffles on the P; my Summitar is even worse.

does it 'scrape' by or do you have to force it?

this does not seem to want to go all the way in and i am hesitant to force it.

i may take the film out and watch as i go.

The 50/3.5 just scrapes the upper baffle. Looking through the back of the camera is a good idea.

There is a passage or two in the Canon Rangefinder book about the Canon Lenses that are not standard Leica LTM and the date it was corrected. There is one section near the back of the book and a couple mentions in the general text. I thought it was 1946, but check it. We should wait to hear too from Frank about his.

My 50mm F1.9 (#31514) mounts with ease on my III-A, L-1 and 7s. It only fully collapses on the III-A. On the others, it collapses part way before hitting the light baffles.

My 50 f1.9 is #40161 and it screws onto my LTM bodies no problem. (Bessa R, FED2, Leitz M/LTM adapter) Hits light baffles in Bessa, no prob with Fed or Leica M2/3.

interestingly, the lens screws into the metal rear lens cap with ease. my cap.
and...it binds when focussing but if i turn the camera on it's back aand focus it's like butter.

ant i checked with the back open, set on b- it IS hitting the light baffles.
guess it really was made for another, older camera.

No, Joe. It doesn't. It tightens up and then I feel a positive stop, but it does not click there like my collapsible Summicrons do. BTW, teh collapsible FED lens jsut tightens up toobut without the positive stop. The Canon lens feels much better as it tightens up.

ok, i feel a bit better.

no click but mine also is very much 'locked' in place till i decide to unlock it.
the baffles are in the way so it's not the lens and that bit of binding i may need to get used to till i have the lens cla'd in the future.

ok, maybe i over reacted, just a minor panic, glad i saved the meltdown for later...
