Proof Sheets
Hi All,
Today I picked up the all the printed sheets of the book for me to proof read, this will take me a couple of days to do. The pics have turned out a lot better than expected and some look like the lenses themselves are jumping out of the page. Even this print I have been told will be improved in the final print. Apparently it goes to to the final print next week and then to the binders. They sure don't muck around. Peter

My anticipation level is rising, and I didn't think that was possible.

Hi all,
Well I signed of the proof sheets today and it will go to print on Monday or Tuesday of next week. It is amazing but it was as if a load was taken of my shoulders once I placed my signature on the sheet. There were very few errors but one stood out that had I had completely missed after many reads and re-reads. On the last page in a column, I noticed there was a list of 8.5cm f/2 lenses. ONLY the first lens of this focal length was issued in "cm”, the rest were in “mm”, and this was discovered at 3am...Green Tea comes in handy sometimes. Quick ring to the layout guy in the morning and he adjusted the error straight away to read T1 lens as 8.5cm f/2 and then 85mm f/2 for the rest. A sigh of relief came from me...otherwise egg-on-face. Anyway, any errors now will be in print. Peter

Update
Been a frustrating week since I signed of the proofs. The paper which I decided to use was in short supply here in little ole Perth so another load had to be ordered from Melbourne, Victoria on the eastern side of Australia (this is like sending stuff from NY to LA). Apparently, the train the paper was on derailed weekend before last and did not arrive until Friday 12th. Today I finally saw some of the first pages to come of the press. Each sheet holds four double pages and I had to check the print quality to see if I was happy with the progress…spot on as far as I am concerned even after they tweaked the amount of black being used. The printer produced a number of sheets each with a different density of black, much like one does when bracketing in a digital camera or inspecting a large photo to check for colour cast etc. I was amazed how much wastage of printed-paper as the printer grabbed a sheet out of each 100 done to check for quality and once satisfied continued on. Tomorrow I go down to check the cover to see if everything is right in that department. It looks like I will take delivery of the final book sometime in the middle of October.

Slight tweaking of the blacks. The one closest was washed out slightly while the top sheet some fine details were becoming hard to see. Ticked the middle one.

First bundle to come of the press. Not a place to put your hand into once it gets going.

Thanks, Pete, for the update. Very professional outfit, from the photos. I'm salivating waiting for mine....
Now for the accessories. That is one large subject! As usual, if I can be of any help....
Are you including the Canon Literature, or just mentioning it where it applies?

Peter,
Very impressive! This is going to be one very classy, high quality book. Really looking forward to seeing it come October/November.

Hi Harry,
That's two of us and I wrote the book but the finished product will be as I hoped it would be. The accessory book is under way and if I need any help with pics or to clarify an item will probably ask on this forum. Again, it will be based on my own collection of over 700 items. Would be nice to get everyone involved. There is a list of literature I referred to in the back of the lens book along with its published #and date of issue. I have thought about the literature but it may appear in the accessory book. Still to sort that one out as it is quite large, or at least what I have in my collection it is. Peter

Thanks Jim, it will be. Already I have sold two books to professional photographers who intend to place it on the front shop counter as a coffee table book. Maybe we can produce many new Canon RF collectors or convert them into appreciating the quality of the old RF equipment. Peter

Yep the $$$ will be helpful when the final bill comes in and it will not be so depressing. So ALL who pre-paid for the book it is appreciated and are guaranteed to get an early serial number from the total 1000 books that are being printed.
Was chin wagging with the printer this morning about where the paper originated. It is produced from plantation Eucalyptus trees in Tasmania. The paper is produced in the Rolling Mills in Burnie, a small town on the north/west coast of Tasmania. Therefore, the total job is all Aussie and environmentally friendly. Peter

Update……………….it is PRINTED
Popped in yesterday to the printers to see stacks of paper lying on the floor all completed. Just in time to see them putting the final tweaking to the black on the front and rear covers and in a flash the printing was finished while I was there.
Now to the bookbinders and this is the process that takes time as each book is individually stitched and bound.

You certainly did things with little regard for costs! But, as expected, you did things to produce a quality result. Good show, Peter, the book looks fabulous in the pictures. I'm standing by the mailbox waiting for the result.

It will be interesting to see the impact your book is going to have on Canon RF Lens prices. I predict they keep on rising !! Can't wait for my copy of the book.

That's the right way he did. CANON = FIRST QUALITY, both in the past and present. Not the "ugly, cheaply brother" of NIKON RF stuff as some people like to look upon it...
