New member...which Leica to buy?

Go the other way around. For your budget you can only pick M2, M3, M4[2p], M5 and M6.

What lens combo do you target: 35/50, pick the M2 (the cheapest M on the used market,
but IMO, the best!), 28/50 pick the M4p, You like 50 and care for portraits, pick an M3.
You absolutely need a meter pick the M6. And so on. They are all great cameras.
Avoid the first few hundered M4-2's and when you get an M3, make sure the RF
is not separated.

And to tackle Wayne:

Nice pic! I think I am going to go for a 35 first and foremost, pref. the Asph. I am also very curious about the 75 1.4, any users out there?

know that you like expensive glass....more than your budget affords you:<

if you wish to shoot the 35 FL, go with Roland's suggestion: get a M2. A great camera which I like better than the m6 or 7 I had. if you are going hardcore avilable light shooting, with no meter other than the one in your head, let me applaud and encourage you. I am one with you in this. Get the manly M2 and be a true photog warrior🙂

My vote would be for the M6ttl but thats because it's the only Leica I've ever owned and I love it to death. But thank goodness we're only debating this over cyberspace. If half the guys posting here were in a room together discussing this, I expect fistfights and duels would soon break out. But that's the sort of passions that Leica can invoke. Don't be persuaded to buy anything less.

Yeah the $850 is just for the body, the lens... well I will probably get a bridge lens like the Voigtlander 35 f/1.7 for the time being and work my way up to the Asph. Anyone use the Voitlander lens?

The 1.2 looks interesting but I think it is a bit too big, kinda defeating the purpose of an unobtrusive lens and camera. What has been you experience?

I have fantasized about getting an M4-2 just because it was the M manufactured during '78 when I was born....

If you want a meter, then the M5 or the M6. Otherwise, M2 or one of the M4 models. If you propose to use a 75 mm without an external finder, your options are limited. An excellent combination, that and a 35 mm.

I was thiking about doing just that Wordpress I just have to make up my mind about the M6. Magus, how do you feel about the M6TTL, still the "nadir" of the M series or a bit better? Also, do we know when the M4-P went to zinc in terms of S/N ? Thanks...

Thanks for the advice, I think something will pop up in the next week weeks! I am looking forward to starting to shoot this summer in Berlin with my new (old) Leica!

MP, M6, M4-P. In that order. The three noted are highly robust and because they're newer would have less mileage than the other notables.

congrats to RF world, land of fabulous lenses..

the brass ones are the good ones...

and the 35 1.2 is good for me because almost all my shooting is low light, the size was initially a turnoff but I got use to it. I can't wait to compare it to the 35 2.5 skopar.

the brass ones are the earlier ones 81-82' and as far as I'm concerned are the best M4-Ps. Later, brass went to zinc in the usual cost cutting measures. I've owned two but didn't want an external meter so traded for M6 and then to MP (brass again!).

The brass M4-Ps have reccessed VF.
