New Nokton: compensating for something!?

Why this feeding frenzy over the Voigtlander f1.1 lens (or the Noctilux, for that matter)? Compensating for something? Oneupmanship?
...

because:
It's fast...

It's cheap...

It'll be faster than yours...

I'll be able to post endless images in the "Show your Voigtlander 1.1 images" thread.

Alas, it is smaller than my pecker so I will not be compensating for anything.

I suspect that a lot of people just do not have the Knowledge, Skill, and Vision to use super-speed lenses and feel they need to compensate by putting down others that like and use them. Might I suggest the Masters and Johnson School of Photography.

The only thing that bugs me is that people call it cheap, due to the grotesque Noctilux prices. It's not. Check out SLR 50/1.2 prices. If or not it's of value to you at this price is totally up to the individual, of course.

I would not call it cheap at $1,200 or so. That's about the price that a used Noctilux 50/1.0 ran at shows less than 10 years ago. I passed up an M3 with 50/1.0 for $1,800 to pick up a Nikon SP. Whoops... The Canon 50/1.2 was a $200 lens, A Nikkor 55/1.2 was $125.

New Leica prices are insane. At least Cosina prices are justifiable.

[SIZE=+1]What cost $1200 in 1998 would cost $1578.25 in 2008. Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2008 and 1998, they would cost you $1200 and $932.16 respectively.

Some people have bandied the words "limited production anniversary lens" around. I see nothing on the official voigtlander site to suggest it is a limited lens. Can anybody (Stephen?) confirm this?

a good reason for super fast glass is so that you can shoot stopped down a little, getting better performance out of the lens, but still with shallow depth of field and bokeh. i imagine the canon .95 must look pretty good at f2.

Contrary to some reports, neither Tom nor I have any reason to believe this is a limited edition lens. In our discussions with Mr. Kobayashi it was understood to be a standard production lens.

I appreciate that information, and think this lens has some real appeal. As much as I'd love to see an S-Mount version, I doubt it will happen. One can hope. M-Mount makes more sense, especially with the Digital offerings.

The shots that Tom A has posted with the new lens have a look very similar to what I get with the Zuiko 50/1.2. So maybe I don't need the new 50/1.1 - also, had the Canon 50/1.2 and sold it, had the Canon 50/0.95 and sold it. Maybe I'm not as enamored of speed as I once was. But maybe if I sold my ver. 1 Summilux...
