New Sigma Quattro DP2?

the AF controls at least look interesting.
Looks like I was way too quick to get excited about that. It's just the same old four-way controller from the previous model in a new position and some design change.

Let's see how the new overall design handles. I am hopeful, the DP1 was a great image maker.

Really nice to see someone come up with something different ... not another faux SLR/faux RF/faux bar of soap.

Maybe they are doing the dual dial style of the Olympus em5.. Based on mode.. For example full manual - one dial assigned to aperture, the other to shutter speed.

Gary

anybody have any idea what the second top dial is for?

Presumably an assignable dial for shutter speed/aperture/ISO/exp.comp, which for me would be ideal.

I'm looking forward to hearing how this performs. I have some big projects coming up later this year and if I could swap my MF TLR for a something like this it would make my life a fair bit easier. I could probably go for an older model with good enough IQ, but the quattro just looks SO bad ass - the first camera that I want purely for the design.

Check out the new aspect ratios. Everything from 20:9 to 1:1. What uses 20:9? I guess this is their pano mode.

Also there is a new JPEG called super high.. Looks like it creates the equiv of a 35mp... Hmmmm.

Gary

Well, that does it for me... if there is a true panoramic mode that doesn't crop too much (being a sigma, I'm sure it'll be fine) I'll be into the 28mm model.

The crop is about 40% on the width side, and is only performed on the in-cam jpeg image.

For scenes without movement or on low wind days, stitching DP2 or DP3 images will give better results, but the DP1 Quattro in 21:9 mode will have the edge in convenience and on scenes with a lot of movement.

Good point... I always forget that! I don't stitch because I compose in my VF and wasn't going to use it for landscapes. I had another idea, but you are right...jpeg only on these cams isn't for me.

It's an interesting function, however, inasmuch as it's the best indication we have that Sigma is starting to take the panorama crowd seriously.

The physical dimensions of the body hint at "pano" design, too.

But I'm still really jonesing for the DP with a 24 or 21 efov...

I really can't say I've missed an EVF on my DPM's ... finally coming to terms with composing via an LCD. It has some real advantages IMO.

I've just noticed that, on Amazon UK, the price of a DP2M has dropped since last week. It's now £369. Other dealers are offering similar low prices. Maybe something new is coming out.

But then, the real question is, what effect will the modification in the sensor design have upon the final image?

One thing is for sure: we can expect images from this new DP2 Quattro to look different from the DP2M before it.

yes, i'm very curious to see the result. i wonder if the new design helps with magenta splotching and skin tone issues, but at what cost. and for shooting in b/w, how the "heavy" blue layer will affect that.

There are some interesting discussions over at DP Review...
