I've been searching for a 50mm equivalent compact - but the lack of handling speed on the Merrill killed Sigma for me. If they have brought the Quattro up to par with Ricoh GRD them I'm interested.
The lack of EVF does not bother me too much; a SBOOI like OVF and the LCD will do fine.

I don't think it is ff. The dp2 is their 40ish body. The same 30f2.8 (45 fov) is still there. The body looks much slimmer but the lens still needs to be the same length. It has a new digital processor, so I suspect improved performance and maybe sensor improvement. If they can get good color up to 1600 or 3200, I'm in.
They mention bigger battery, so that is nice. Not a square soap box anymore. I like the grip. The ovf looks better.

I am beginning to suspect evf is not currently in the cards.... Because a next gen would have had market pressure for an evf by now.
The amount of data bandwidth and horsepower required to support both the evf and LCD at same time could be the issue. Remember they would now have to split up work to dump jpg/raw to sd card, show the live view on the LCD and the evf. Or at least make the LCD an info display when the evf is use. Could be that the evf looks jerky because there is not enough left to push three data streams.
I have learned to shoot w/ ovf. The focus confirm led is in an easy location to check.

I love the new 'focus' button. Sounds like af-l will be greatly improved (and there will be a way to disable af on shutter). My only real gripe with the DPMerrills.
Can anyone tell me about that focal plane? It seems as though he distance between the rear element and the sensor will be shorter than most. Odd? Looks as though they lengthened the lens housing to make the body thinner. (As the size of the lens looks more like the 50 on the DP3 than the tiny 30 on the dp2m). Also, any ideas as to why the lens housing is asymmetric?
Anyway, looks like Sigma is leagues ahead of any other camera maker in terms of artistic industrial design. Makes Sony's stuff look a decade late. And everyone else a century.
Skeptical note: I'm going skiing with my DP2M because of its quality and dimensions. I don't think I could fit the DP2Q under my jacket, much less in a large pocket.

Anyone noticed inconsistency in graphics work? In title DP is caps like Sigma does it, then in lowercase.
What quattro means in Sigma camera, now four sensor layers instead of three? Fuji would add cyan layer if SW processing wouldn't be enough.

ah - quattro for 4 layers, now that would make some sense with regards to the name. i couldn't figure out why they would call it that.

Sony had a 4-colour filter on their old CCD. RGBE (E for emerald, which was a bit closer to a cyan I guess). F828.
I can't imagine a 4-layer Foveon would be feasible as far as light penetration or processing power is concerned.

Vincenzo.
Quattro for 4th generation?
New body still has X3 sensor.

So even better base iso and even more unusable high iso?
It would be awesome if they make an ILC model...

I don't understand from their strange pixel count (was it 15MP, or 45MP on the Merills?) if they boosted the resolution...

Oh my... I just looked at the new link... The dp Merrill's had 15million photo sites. U got 45mp by doing 15mp times three (RGB). If the photoblog table is accurate, then there are two possible interpretations for 29mp.
- 29 million photo sites times 3 or
- 29 mp is already the 3x multiple which means that this is a smaller mp sensor to provide better high iso.
The old 15mp x 3 already created a 45+ mb file and 80mb tiff16, if this is a 29x3.. This is going to be a huge monster raw file (89mb).

and earlier models were never particularly fast writing those raw's to card. waiting for buffer to clear might take some time

The link is up on the Sigma France site.
The Quattro has more MP than Merrill series. How much I cannot tell. They only mention it being the equivalent of 39MP in a CMOS format and having 30% higher resolution than the previous Merrill sensor. That makes sense, since Sigma always claimed the Merrill sensor was the equiv of 30MP.
The lenses are all the same, as is the efov. The sensor size thus has not changed. Will be interesting to see how that increase in MP affects the Foveon sensor. But since these are essentially good light cameras, it probably doesn't matter anyway.
I may just spring for the #2 model, my most used single body set up for long distance backpacking. Better battery life would be worth it to me.

Jarski,
Yeah I am thinking same thing, but I am wondering if slow write was more of digital processing issue rather than actual sd card write time.
I just did a google search on it.. Cnet and forbes are both saying 20 million photo sites..
This is surprising that they are ahead of the official Sigma announcement.

They also say that the processing times have decreased, battery life is longer, and the files are "lighter".

They've increased the top blue layer to 20MP, while the green and red layers underneath stay at 4.9MP. That's how they claim to have increased the MP count on the same Merrill-sized sensor without added noise complication. That gives a 1:1:4 ratio in MP count between the three layers, hence the name "Quattro".
Looks like that blue layer used alone might give added range for shooting monochrome at high ISO.
I like the design. It looks like it will sit as well on a tripod as in the hand. The grip part seems to allow for a new larger battery.

Thanks for link... Yeah I found the diagram in the technology section... The Quattro must represent the 4 pixel blue layer.. So instead of the traditional 3 x number, it is as u say, 20 plus 4.9 plus 4.9. This should improve high iso capability.. Now I understand why cnet and forbes are saying 20mp.
Ok .. Pre-order dp2q --> Fuji xt1 (not) --> wait for xp2 for sure now
