New Sony A7II with 5 Axis Stabilization Announced

Looks like Oly Partnership has paid off for Sony in the 7II....

is that a grip better shaped? ;)

Still don't like the hard edges of the prism though

5 axis is fantastic, but a shame the sensor is the same one that is plagued by reflections when shooting scenes with points of light.

I'm thinking the 5 axis is going to be much more useful in the A7R model, which needs a really steady hand to maximize the potential of those 36mp

Maybe they've improved on that regard.

Anyways, I haven't seen anything very objectionable out of my A7. The lens flare is usually much more distracting than the sensor green flares.

I haven't seen the points of light problem with my A7.

I use the A7 as a Leica R digital body surrogate. IBIS in the A7II (and the revised grip and shutter release location) should make it even better at that. If the sensor and shutter are the same as in the A7, I'm happy. If they're improved, I'll be even happier.

Sony is saying "slightly improved", which I interpret as the same sensor but with more phase detection points.

Frankly I'd take the A7S' extra stop-and-a-half of high iso over IS any day...none of the lens IS or IBIS system I've used does much good with scenes in motion, and that's where a lower shutter speed might really help.

Just returned my A7 that I bought from B/H 10 days ago. So glad they have a generous return policy. Now the wait for the A7ii....

I'll probably pick up the A7 II to go along with my A7 - I applaud Sony for their developments and engineering efforts but what most people really want with these cameras are more native lenses.

The current lineup is only "ok" - yes the cameras are great to use with third party lenses but native lenses are really what will solidify these bodies with people looking to switch to Sony from a bigger DSLR brand (i.e. Nikon / Canon)

Cheers,
Dave

Looks like a nice update. I wonder why no A7r version. A7 should go down on the used market too. I agree with dcsang though... need more primes.

What's up with lenses? The IBIS is great but .... AF primes yo! Where are they?
Already a second ideration of the body and only a handful of optics available...
Sony is still an electronics company I guess

I know Sony doesn't have a full set full frame E-mount lenses, but there is a decent range of high quality lenses:
16-35/4
24-70/4
70-200/4
35/2.8
55/1.8
And what you're missing you can add with the dedicated adapter and A-mount lenses. Most people won't miss a lot imho.

Having said that, more lenses are always better :D

I don't think of IS as assisting for low light conditions much, and the A7's ISO 6400-125000 is already so good I don't find myself needing IS for low light much.

Where IS is useful (to me) is when I'm using 90, 135, 180 mm and longer lenses in GOOD light: it helps by keeping the camera and lens steady when the shutter time drops below the unstabilized hand-holdable limit. That is, the required shutter speed may be 1/100 of a second, good enough for dealing with moving subjects, but not good enough to get a critically sharp photo with a 135 or 180mm lens unaided.

For some scenes, 12Mpixel is good enough but for others the 24Mpixel capture helps too. For me, it's a toss up. I've been happy with the A7.. :)

According to DPReview, the amount of AF sensors are the same on A7 and A7M2. So I would venture to guess that it is more of a algorithm improvement. If that is the case, then we can dream about a firmware update to our A7 to improve AF... Just dreaming...

For me, the cameras are really interesting and I could see a point in the future where I might be tempted. But the lenses are, and I gather will continue to be, on the premium side price-wise. So the investment gets hefty. And have you seen the size of that 90mm macro?
