Just purchased a Bessa R with a Jupiter 8, have used SLR's for 40+ years and wanted to try a RF.

I know the R has a M39 screw mount. Can any give me a definitive list of lenses that will fit? I've hear the Jupiter 35 will damage the camera?

Thanks for helping

In a word, no. There are literally hundreds of lenses that will fit, possibly well over a thousand, made over the last 85 years or so. A list of lenses that won't fit would be a lot shorter, and it consists mainly (probably entirely) of elderly wide-angles with rear elements that stick out a long way. With the exception of the Jupiter-12, most are rare and expensive, so I'd not worry too much if I were you.

Cheers,

R.

Regarding a different RF-camera, but it's true of course:

Ah... I'd forgotten collapsibles. Thanks. The list almost certainly holds good for 35mm Bessas as well as the Epson. Interesting that the Jupiter-12 can be used. Of course it's easy to find out with a Bessa:

Remove lens

Open back

Lock shutter open

Gingerly introduce lens in question, looking for hang-ups.

Cheers,

R.

I know the Contax G had a third set of shutter blades, and the Bessas must have done something similar to prevent light from bleeding through between the blades - SLR type focal plane leaf shutters are not light tight enough for long term exposure (as it would happen on a camera with no mirror). So these shutters must stack deeper than a SLR, digital or cloth shutter. On the R-D1 on the other hand, the shutter might even have normal depth, but as a APS-C device it probably does not have a 24x36mm clearance around the shutter itself...

Do a web search for "39mm screw lenses" and look at the Camerapedia page. I think they have a fairly comprehensive list too....of manufacturers at least.

You'll see lots of manufacturers, but really only a handful are really common. If you want a modern lens, your choices are fewer. Some FSU from recent times, CV are recent, and the Ricoh lenses are recent (but uncommon),...I could go on. Just start searching. That's part of the fun.

Welcome to the forum.

Too many options to list but FSU lenses are great, although be sure to get them from reputable sellers. CV lenses are a great choice. Cameraquest and Ken Rockwell site have some reviews on them.

Welcome and have fun :)

Welcome and enjoy your stay. The J8 fits nicely and is a very good lens.
You'll like the people and the knowledge here. Thanks for stopping by.

Everything is complicated in RF after SLR...
No, Jupiter 12 (35 in your language) will not damage the camera, it will block light meter.

Welcome, my first interchangeable rangefinder was a Bessa R2 and a ltm Canon 50mm 1.4
I still use that combo often, great lens.
Hope you enjoy shooting yours!
