New used X-Pro2 on the way

Well, I did it.

I had the KEH email offer of 15% off on orders over $750 and it was good until midnight tonight.

I found an Excellent Plus Fuji X-Pro2 for sale on the KEH website.

I did some quick calculations and determined the final cost would be just over a grand (about $500 less than the current rebate price for a new X-Pro2).

I had the credit card in my wallet.

I mulled it over, talked myself out of it a couple of times, talked myself into it a couple of times.

And then talked myself into it one more time.

Credit card out of wallet.

Hit the "Add to Cart" button and finished the purchase process.

I'm anxious to see if it really is that much of an improvement over the X-Pro1, the camera that currently receives most of my use and affection.

I've been in love with the XP1 for a couple of years now. My only quibbles have been fairly minor such as the access to the SD card due to the placement in the battery compartment.

My main nitpick is the use of the EVF. It seems to me Fuji made the hybrid viewfinder with the optical portion and electronic portion with two slightly different apparent distances. Most people's eyesight can compensate for this but I require progressive lenses with significant differences in distant and near vision. Simply put, I can't get the EVF in focus with my corrective lenses. Since Fuji changed the viewfinder arrangement when making the X100S (the hybrid viewfinder in mine fits me perfectly), I expect the XP2 will help in this regard. But I love using the OVF in the XP1. When I need an EVF camera, I have the XT1.

Looking forward to seeing how the new/used camera works out.

The hybrid viewfinder in the XP2 is nice as it adds and improves on the X100S ERF mode. Along with the magnified focus point view you can also select a full screen tiny EVF window in the corner. That works well for using the OVF but also being able to quickly check framing and/or exposure. EVF is much improved compared to the XP1, esp. in low light or with fast motion.

Bravo! I bought the 16-55 lens for my XPro1 at a similar sale at B&H. What a great way to save beaucoup bucks!

Been reading the Pfirstinger ebook on the X-Pro2 to get familiar with it ahead of time. Looks like a lot of additional features for me to turn off. 😉

Also looks like lots of improvements in the areas that are important to me. 😀

I'll let you know how I like it after I get it and get it all set up for my preferences.
 
Got it this afternoon. Nice! I've been playing with it and setting it up for my use. Took a few pix of the dog and my wife and stuff around the house. It looks like it works properly. Of course I'll need more time with it before doing anything serious. Looked at a few Raw files in Lightroom and they look good to me.

I can already see I'm gonna like the hybrid viewfinder much better on the XP2. I can adjust it so I can clip between the EVF and OVF seamlessly. I won't need to have to depend on the XT1 for using the 14/2.8 since I can use the EVF in the new camera. Otherwise, after turning off all the extraneous functions I don't use, it seems to feel like the XP1 in use. That's a Good Thing in my opinion.

Happy to learn you're pleased. I really like mine. I also have he 14/2.8. I only use the EVF with this lens or the rare occasion when I do close ups with the 23/2 XF WR.
 
Well, I've had it for a few days and I've made a few observations.

First of all, I really don't see any improvement in image quality over the XP1. Now you have to keep in mind that I shoot Raw and convert to B&W about 99.9% of the time. B&W looks great with both cameras and I've been very happy with all the Fuji cameras I've used in this regard. Also, all of my shooting thus far has been done in good (and plentiful) available light. The XP2 probably will handle low light and high ISO levels better than the XP1 but, honestly, I seldom shoot under such conditions.

The XP2 handles much better than the XP1. The viewfinder is better and, for some reason, the way it fits my hands is an improvement. It feels smoother in operation and the shutter sounds more solid. Love the larger exposure compensation dial--unlike some I've never had a problem inadvertently changing settings. The XP2 dial is excellent! The ISO dial is a little hard for me to see but, fact is, I shoot Auto ISO these days. After playing with ISO settings on my XP1 and other Fujis, I decided to just let the camera do its thing. Others have complained about the new method of setting the ISO but it's not an issue in my book.

But there's a few things I don't like as much as I like about the XP1. The AFL button on the XP2 drives me crazy. It's smaller and it's flush with the camera surface. I use the AFL button as a switch and I miss the ability to just hit it quickly with the side of my thumb to switch it on or off. Also, the shutter release button is loose and wobbly. I use a screw-in soft release (like I do on the XP1) but I worry that a slight bump might not damage the camera's shutter release. While I love the adjustable diopter, it changes settings too easily. However, that seems to be the case with all the other Fujis I've used. Every single Fuji camera I have with an adjustable diopter has gaffer tape covering the dial because every single one of them too easily changes settings without meaning to. I know a lot of people love the joystick and consider it the best new feature on Fuji's cameras. I'm ambivalent about it. I've turned it off in the menu.

I'm also not crazy about the viewfinder display in the XP2. Exposure compensation and frame lines are kind of small and dim compared to the XP1. It's not bad but it's not as good as the older display, IMO. I also prefer how the Menu and Q buttons turn on the back display on the XP1. With the XP2, unless you turn on the View Mode button first the Menu and Q displays in the viewfinder. That really drives me nuts on occasions.

The XP1 is far from perfect but I still love it. The XP2 is certainly a better camera and I'm learning to love it as well.
