New York state law forbids the Met from charging admission. The museum works hard to make it seem like you have to pay $25 to get in, but you have the legal right to refuse any donation, and they must let you in.

British Museum entrance fee: 16,7£
Fondation Herni Cartier-Bresson in Pairs entrance fee: 8€
The Metropolitan Museum of Art entrance fee: $25
and so on...
Unless you're going to a special exhibition, entrance to the British Museum is free, as are majority of London's museums and art galleries.
The MET, when I was there in April this year, was free, too, though the suggested entrance fee was $25.
