New York New York City - January Meetup

Hey Fellas.
Philippe L had a great idea to do a critique of each others work (for those who want to be critiqued of course). I thought about some spaces for this and the Mulberry Street Library came to mind (right across the street from Puck Fair).

They do have presentation space available but only for Saturday January 4th (they are closed on Sundays and other Saturdays are booked). The group normally meets on Sundays so if this won't work then we can scrap it, but just an idea.

If there are other suggestions for a meeting place/place for presentation, please let me know (accommodating the Sunday schedule would be great).

The first week in January is generally the coldest week of the year. I prefer later in January if possible. Also this gives me some time to possible have some prints.

Guys, there is a small studio in Camera Club of New York (37th St. btw 8th & 9th Ave) that members can reserve it for a few hours for free. I can check if any Sunday afternoon in Januray that is open, if you guys are okay with the location.

I think Steve mentioned a place two meet-ups ago that sounded like a gallery with a print viewing space that we could get access to. He also suggested rooms at the ICP, but that would be a no-beer meet.

Have we decided on a date for January? Just before we left on Sunday, I thought that we decided on January 12th, the second Sunday, is this ok for everyone? Also, are simple work prints ok? I am a photo tech at a CVS in New Jersey and have access to their photo kiosks, not exactly profesional grade paper (thermal prints) but you would be surprised at the output quality of these machines. Also, what is the minimum size of the prints we can show? I have seen a couple of the books that members have brought to the meetups and it seems that the prints are 5 by 7 inches. Is that size ok? I think that 4 by 6 inch prints are too small to show any real picture quality, but if that size is ok to bring then that also works for me. The largest size that these kiosks produce are 8 by 10 inches. I haven't set up a darkroom in a very long time, maybe sometime in the future. I have a Valoy (Leitz) enlarger dating back to 1928. Believe it or not, it was a joy to use back in my younger days.

Bring anything... 4x6" is fine when looking at composition and content. People have brought slides before.

The books Pramodh and I make are monthly books we do just to see our photos in something other than the computer... it's cheap and doesn't take up much space at the 7" size we use. I've brought bigger books in the past as well.

If we do this, I will most likely bring various sizes up to 20x30".

That man be Steve. Also know that Steve left that magazine behind, and I took it home. I'll bring it to the next Meet-Up.

Later in the month also allows me more time to get some prints together. I'm thinking of getting a 6x9 printed on 20x24 fibre, and I might be able to take advantage of their framing sale.

As for prints , I'm experimenting right now with magcloud . Its a nice way to package and distribute your work . I'm also waiting for a new lensbase to arrive from Europe that I can use for an 80mm lens on my enlarger . Can't wait to print those 6x7 big(ger)negatives from my newly acquired Mamiya 7 (although I'mnot much of a printer) . Fun stuff to do while the weather is frigid ..

They aren't really zines. They are just blurb books that both Pramodh and I make on a monthly basis. I started making them every month about 2-3 years ago and it's helped with editing and stuff. Pramodh saw what I was doing and decided that he would do the same. I think it's helped his photography too.

Yeah, it's helped quite a bit. Nothing like actually editing a months images and getting them in print form. One of the many things I've learnt from you john

I'm in the process of learning LR-5, and I'm getting ready to load ink into an Epson 3880 that I bought earlier this year. I plan on using a Peizography selenium inkset for 9 blacks without the dithering of the K7 OEM Epson inkset. No scanning for me: I own a Monochrom.

Back in art school (1970's) I use to be a very good B&W printer, but currently right now I'm just making mucho negatives in 135 and 120. I own a Besseler 23C non XL, but I don't have the space to set up a darkroom.

I'm iching to get a 120 negative printed big on fibre at my custom lab. Perhaps I'll bring that new print to the January Meet-Up.
