NEX 7 + 24mm 1.8 - returning it

I had the same "meh" response after getting my hands on the Panasonic G1. Turned around and sold it to someone else after about a week.

Sometimes we just dont bond with those things we wanted.....

Hopefully the EM5 will be better for me and hope you find a good camera to replace it soon.

Did you try adjusting Creative Styles? If you're a raw shooter, you should turn the contrast all the way down, which unplugs shadows quite a bit. Also, a leather half case, like the one from Gariz, will bulk the camera up nicely.

I tried various different setting. It didnt seem to work.

The camera has found a home. Instead of going back to 'open box' circulation at the store.

A nice gentleman in SF was willing to take this.

In another news.. I got two Leica Noctilux in the mail. Just like two NEX 7 I got in the mail. I have over extended my self on preorders....

The Sony nex's are so great on paper. The specs and especially adapters and peak-focusing are all we need for our legacy glass. That nex-7 was made to make us all happy. Intellectually. But then, every time I hold one in my hands in the store, it somehow doesn't click. Not sure if pun intended. It still feels like that first Cybershot point-and-shoot that introduced me to digital. More like a game console than a camera. Then I wondered if I really bought that nice glass to add it to my Cybershot, and bought an M8. 🙂

Have you tried it with legacy glass ?

I first held one and wasn't too impressed.
Then I mounted my Summarit 50 on it.

Wow, instant infatuation.

The EVF is good enough for me.
I have to visualize whatever I'm photographing with an Rf or SLR anyway.

"Creative Style" settings should have no effect on RAW capture, which are processed outside of the camera in image processing software, Lightroom, CS5, etc... "Creative Style" settings would effect only in-camera processed jpegs.

I played with the Nex-5 but found it ergonomically odd. Not to mention, aside from legacy lenses, the 24/1.8 is the only decent lens for it.

It is unfortunate. The NEX 5n and the 7 seem like awesome cameras with great sensors. They are crippled by the fact that the NEX system's lenses are less then stellar and don't compliment their sensors. I know you can get an adapter for the ALpha lenses, but that takes away from the compactness of the NEX system.

utterly mistaken at many levels---but certainly a common refrain.

you should do your homework.

Well I own a NEX 5N and find the current lens line-up completely uninteresting. Besides the Zeiss we have some slow zooms and a pair of slow primes with middling reviews. The 50/1.8 looks interesting but is an odd focal length for APS-C. What am I missing?

I like the camera with adapted glass, but would like to see some compelling native AF offerings.

The e-mount lenses are pretty inexpensive and offer decent IQ. I guess they appeal to a larger market. I agree, some of their choices in focal lengths seem strange -- why 50mm when a 60mm would be better for portraits? Why 30mm when 28 or 24 would be better? Just to protect the 24mm Zeiss?

But overall, the pricing is good and quality decent. I appreciate that they are trying to retain larger market appeal. If they priced things like Leica, I'd probably not be interested. The bang-for-the-buck is huge with the Nex line.

That's exactly the point. If you don't shoot jpeg and rely on Creative Style settings for output, it is wise to tweak them in order to get a better picture in the EVF, since the EVF/LCD reflects jpeg settings. The first place to start is lowering contrast, which unplugs EVF shadows.
